Clarence E. Powell, Jr., affectionately known as "Jake" was born on March 28, 1924 in Jamaica, NY and departed this life on January 23, 2025.
Clarence was the loving son of the late Clarence Sr. and Minnie Powell (Johnson), he was the oldest of ten siblings. Clarence is survived by his sister Barbara and preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Robert, Earl, Elsie, Lawrence, Gloria, Muriel, Charles and Warren. He was raised in a Baptist household and received his education from PS 116, PS 40, Jamaica High School, and Lincoln University. In 1963, Clarence married Mona Wade, from their union, two sons were born, Alfred and Kenneth.
A proud veteran, Clarence served in the United States Army from June 12, 1943, to April 12, 1946, completing his tour of duty with an Honorable discharge. Clarence worked for the United States Post Office from 1946 to 1954. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1955, where he retired as a second grade detective assigned to the Homicide Squad in 1975. Following retirement, Clarence owned and operated "Powell's Place", a well-known bar and restaurant in Hollis, NY from 1974-1994.
Throughout his life, Clarence was actively involved in various organizations, including the Cambria Heights Sports Association, Kiwanis Club of Cambria Heights, where he served as President, the Detective Endowment Association, and the American Legion. From 1982-1988, Jake was elected and served the community as Male District Leader in the 33rd Assembly District in Queens and formed the Douglas King Democratic Club. In 1989, Clarence moved to Co-op City in the Bronx, where he was elected to the Board of Directors from 1993-1999 and served as President from 1996-1997. From 2000-2004, Clarence was elected Democrat Male District Leader in the 82nd Assembly District in the Bronx.
Clarence was a devoted family man, who loved and worshipped his grandchildren. Clarence's legacy lives on through his sons, Alfred (Jocelyn), Kenneth (Michele), daughter Crystal (Errol), daughter-in-law Zory (deceased),grandchildren Caprie, Danielle, Kenneth Jr, Justin, Jasmine (deceased), Bryan, Brandon, Kayla, Jeffrey (deceased), Jewel and great-grandchildren, Anthony, Isaiah, and Gabriel, sister Barbara, sister-in-law Mary, fiancee Othelia Jones and a host of nieces and nephews.
In honor of his memory, Clarence alluded to if you wish to remember him, do it with a "Kind Word or Deed" to someone in need. By doing so, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
