Clark D. Van Pelt

Of Deposit, NY

Clark D. VanPelt, 92, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, at the NYS Veterans Home at Oxford. Born on February 14, 1933, in Deposit, NY, Clark's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love.

Clark served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant before receiving his honorable discharge. After his military service, he embarked on a long and fulfilling career as a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1989 after 33 years of dedicated service.

He graduated from Deposit Central High School, Class of 1950. On June 22, 1957, he married the love of his life, Catherine Scheidegger. Their 69 years of marriage were marked by love, partnership, and shared interests. Together, they created a vibrant family, raising two sons, Bryan J. Van Pelt (Mary) and Scott B. Van Pelt (Debra). Clark’s pride extended to his grandchildren, Evan VanPelt (Ashlyn), Anthony Van Pelt, and Ryan Van Pelt, as well as his step-grandchildren, Michelle Sullivan (Thomas) and Matthew O'Brien (Kelly), and step-great-grandchildren Taylor Sullivan, Tucker Sullivan, Evan O'Brien, and Avery O'Brien. He found great joy in family gatherings and cherished the time spent with all of them.

Clark was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Deposit, NY, since 1952, reflecting his deep commitment to faith and community. He enjoyed various hobbies, including golfing, bowling, and hunting. A devoted father, he coached little league for many years while his sons were involved. He and Catherine loved to take walks together and often traveled south, creating lasting memories along the way.

He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Jeffrey O'Neil, along with Fred Scheidegger (Pat) and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his mother, Grace Van Pelt; stepfather, William Sampson; sisters-in-law Alice Aiken (Roger), Sally O'Neil, Jane Stanley (Charles), Mary Chesebro (Donald); and brother-in-law John Scheidegger.

Clark's absence will be felt by all who knew him.
