Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whiting's Funeral Home - Williamsburg from Jul. 29 to Aug. 8, 2025.
Clay Conway Hargrave of White Plains, Maryland, was born on September 29, 1969, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late William McKinley Jones and Eunice Cox Hargrave. He departed his earthly life on July 26, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
At the age of 9, Clay confessed Christ as his Personal Savior, was baptized, and joined Chickahominy Baptist Church in Toano, VA, under the leadership of Dr. Junius H. Moody. Clay later reunited with Chickahominy Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. Sylvester K. Diggs and Apostle Corwin R. Hammond, Sr., where he served on the Praise Team and Sunday School ministry. He later united with Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Temple Hills, MD, under the leadership of Rev. Larry Phillip McCray. Clay lived his early years in the Chickahominy and Centerville areas of
Williamsburg, VA, completing his elementary education in the Williamsburg-James City County Public School System. He later moved to Northern Virginia, where he finished his secondary education in the Arlington County Public Schools and graduated from Yorktown High School.
Clay was a master of many trades, but his passion was for electronics. He was a licensed Journeyman Electrician, with certifications in residential and commercial wiring. He was employed at Helix Electric for 10 years as a Master Electrician and, most recently, as Superintendent. Often called a workaholic, he took pride in completing major contractual construction projects such as hospitals and malls, on or before schedule, to perfection with zero safety incidents.
Clay loved, loved, loved his family. Affectionately called Daddy or Granddaddy Clay, his daughters and grandchildren were his greatest joy and inspiration. His nieces and nephews called him the Fun Uncle because they knew that they would always have a good time when Uncle Clay was around. He was devoted to his sisters and brothers, having a very special bond with each of them. He greeted everyone with his signature mischievous grin, and addressed them by their relationship: "Hey Wife," "Hey Brother-in-law," "Hey Sis," "Hey Nephew," "Hey Niece." This personal greeting went beyond his blood family but extended to their friends because everyone who met Clay claimed him as their own brother or uncle. Clay had a cheerful spirit and a giving heart. His laughter was contagious, and he brought joy to any room that he entered. Clay was a natural-born leader at home, in the community, in the workplace, and with his siblings. He was the Patriarch of our family, even though he was the youngest. Clay was an Overcomer – a true example of God's grace, goodness, and mercy. He experienced many hardships in life, but he persevered, turning his trials into triumphs, his obstacles into opportunities, and his messes into blessings. When others counted him down and out, he bounced back victoriously, becoming a highly successful and accomplished family and career man. Clay worked hard, played hard, loved hard, and lived life to the fullest. Clay was mild-mannered and easy-going, but would boldly step up to protect his family and friends, which he did until his last breath. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, hosting family dinners at his home, and watching his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Though he has departed this world, the love he gave and the lives he touched will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
Clay was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Cox Hargrave, William Mckinley Jones, and Julia Jones; his paternal grandparents, James Wesley and Gracie Lee Jones; his maternal grandmother Hattie Cox; brothers, James Ford and Ralph Ford; nephew and niece, Rayvaughn Brody and Tonnica Ford; aunts, Mary Louise Washington, Erma Jones Druitt, and Charlotte Bellamy Clinkscale; and his card-playing, horseshoe-throwing buddies, Lee 'Buck' Taswell, Clifton Bartlett, Garrett Bartlett, Sr., and Jesse Cowles.
