Cletus Raymond Elbert, was born on January 7, 1932, near Fenton, Iowa, to Bernard and Mary (Marte) Elbert. He grew up on the farm, with his five sisters, where he would eventually spend many years of his life. Clete attended St. Ellen's Catholic Grade School and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1950. He then dove straight into farming, sparking a 74-year-long passion for the land that defined much of his life.
On December 26, 1959, Clete married the love of his life, Kathleen Conlon, in Ayrshire, Iowa. Together, they started their life on a farm southwest of Emmetsburg (where their son Marte currently lives). In the years that followed, they made several moves and eventually settled in Great Oak Township, southwest of Emmetsburg, in 1972. It was here that Clete and Kathleen raised their three children and continued their farming operations, a lifestyle that Clete truly cherished. In 1991, they moved into Emmetsburg, but Clete's love for farming remained at the core of who he was.
Clete's favorite season was harvest, and he never missed a single one-he was even in the combine last fall. He was proud of the work he did and the life he built, and it was something he shared with Kathleen and their family. During the winter months, Clete and Kathleen would escape to Texas, where they spent 20 wonderful years. In the summers, they enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of their lake home on Lost Island Lake, making memories with friends and family.
Sadly, Kathleen passed away in 2011. After her passing, Clete continued to embrace life, spending his winters in Mesa, Arizona. There, he enjoyed the warmth of the southwest sun and fully embraced the retirement community and its activities. He formed many lasting friendships and created cherished memories with family during his time in his winter home.
Clete lived a full and rich life, deeply rooted in his love for community. He was a dedicated member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, and in the 1970s and 1980s, he served on the St. Pat's Committee. In his younger years, Clete enjoyed fishing on Five Island Lake, just a short distance from the farm where he grew up. He was also an active participant in the men's bowling league and became well-known for his skill in welding. Clete spent countless hours crafting his own tools and farm equipment, a hobby he loved. Unfortunately, after receiving a pacemaker, he was no longer able to continue that cherished pastime.
Family was at the heart of everything Clete did. He took immense pride in attending his children's sporting events and 4-H activities. As his family grew, he continued this tradition by supporting his five grandchildren in their various activities, always with a smile and a loving presence. Clete discovered a passion for woodworking and took immense pride in his collection of red antique tractors. He enjoyed showcasing them in tractor rides and parades, always eager to share his beloved collection with others. In his later years, Clete found joy in playing card games, spending time at the lake with family, and indulging in plenty of ice cream.
Clete passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Parc Hall in Emmetsburg, at the age of 93. Throughout his life, Clete lived fully, cherishing the connections he made with everyone who crossed his path. In his final years, he was deeply grateful for the care and support he received from those who helped him along the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Mary Elbert; his beloved wife, Kathleen; his grandson, Isaac Bechard; and his sisters, Rosemary Coughlin, Arlene Joynt, Adeline Drew, and Ellen Joynt.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Marte Elbert of Emmetsburg, IA; Maureen (Mike) Bechard of Eagan, MN; and Mike (Jenn) Elbert of Rock Rapids, IA. His grandchildren, Maddie (Mitch) Van Beek, Jack Bechard, Josh Elbert, Chloe Bechard, and Matt Elbert, were the lights of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Drew of Emmetsburg, IA.
Clete lived a life filled with love, hard work, and devotion to his family and faith. He will be deeply missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Clete's name to Parc Hall in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
