TOWN OF OHIO – Clifford E. Satterley, 98, of Gray-Wilmurt Road, died on March 28, 2024 at the Oxford Veterans Home, where he has resided for the past 2 years.
Mr. Satterley was born on April 3, 1925 in Fairfield, a son of the late William and Minnie (Durrin) Satterley. He received his education in Fairfield and Newport schools. In 1943, he entered the U. S. Marine Corps and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in action against enemy forces at Iwo Jima in 1945. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps Reserves in 1947 at the rank of Corporal. On January 1, 1959, Cliff was united in marriage with the former Mary V. Bernier in the Town of Ohio. He was a logger and sawmill operator early in life and then worked for Eastern Rock Products for over ten years. He later returned to his sawmill operation until his retirement. Mary preceded him in death on March 12, 2011.
Clifford was a member of D.A.V. Chapter #82, Utica and a former member of Adirondack Post #1118 American Legion. At one time he was a member of the former Wallace-Gibson Post #1747 American Legion as well.
Survivors include his dedicated caregivers, Debbie and James Taylor of the Town of Ohio; and many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Mary, he was predeceased by three brothers, Leland, William and Lloyd "Jack" Satterley; three sisters, Ellen Looman, Helen Scanlon and Hazel Eaker; and by two step-sons, Jack and Robert Putnam.
A graveside service will take place a St. John's Cemetery, Newport on Friday, May 17th at 10:00 am, with the Rev. Richard Chrisman officiating. Military honors will be conferred by the U. S. Marine Corps and the Tun Tavern Leathernecks Marine Corps League, of Boonville. In accordance with Clifford's wishes, there are no calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted to the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport.
