Clifford Roy Shivers, born on June 28, 947, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Henry and Grace Lenora Shivers, passed away September 2, 2024. He spent most of his early life in Sunnyside, Houston, TX. He attended Blackshear Elementary in the 3rd Ward and was among the pioneering students of Addicks Middle School's inaugural 9th grade class. In 1965, he graduated from Evan E. Worthing Senior High School, where he was a standout in track and baseball. Clifford pursued higher education at Texas Southern University, working diligently to support himself through school. He earned his bachelor's degree in business in I971, becoming the first member of the Shivers family to graduate from college. His academic achievements led to an internship in California with United California Bank, where he honed his skills in banking. Clifford returned to Texas to join Texas Commerce Bank as their first Black loan officer, a pioneering role in the field.
An entrepreneurial spirit drove Clifford to invest in and manage a strip center in Sunnyside for over 30 years, transforming it into a cornerstone of the community. His presence, alongside his mother Grace, was a welcomed and familiar sight in the neighborhood.
After his successful banking career, Clifford transitioned to the Texas Rehabilitation Commission as a rehabilitation officer, and later followed his true passion for education. He taught at Madison, Furr, and concluded his career at Jones High School within the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Clifford's dedication to his students and his unwavering kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Clifford's selflessness and warm spirit were evident in his daily life, always placing the needs of others before his own. His generosity and compassion were felt by everyone around him.
He is survived by his son, Clifford Wade Shivers; his brother, Gregory Lynn Shivers; his sister, Myrtle McSheppard; his aunts, Dorothy Jean Ardison and Mary Catherine Grant; and a large extended family and many cherished friends.
Clifford Roy Shivers will be remembered for his contributions to his community, his groundbreaking achievements, and the deep kindness he extended to all. Beloved Father, Brother, and Friend. Forever in our hearts.
