Coleane Rice Brackens, 88, of Newport News, VA, passed away, October 28, 2024. She was a native of Madison County, NC and the daughter of the late Jefferson and Leona Lamb Rice. Mrs. Brackens was a retired schoolteacher.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Brackens, sisters Elizabeth Pittman, Imogene Cassidy.
She is survived by one son, Howard E Brackens II, and four daughters, Tracy Smith, Karen Gregory (Bobby), Rene Thomas (Eric) and Rita Wildman (Art); her brother, James Spence Rice (Edith); ten grandchildren, Ashley Smith Askew (Cameron), Chloe Brackens, Richard Smith-(Stacie), Andy Pittman, Jessica Hennig (Paul), Micheal Brackens, Sherrie Scott, Joni Wildman, Heather Gregory-Pelausa (Orion), and Sarah Gregory; twelve great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral and Cremation Service, 7626 Hwy 213, Mars Hill, NC 28754. Rev. Ben Foster will officiate. The burial will follow in the Spencer Rice Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

I was around 6 or 7 and grandda used to feed the squirrels in the yard and one day they were fighting over which would get the peanut and ran up grandda's leg chewing it up with those sharp claws, the look on gma's face to this day makes me smile.
