Collins M. Bruer, 77, deeply loved husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather (also affectionately known as our badass), passed away after a long battle with glioblastoma on March 4, 2025, surrounded by his bride of 56 years, Jana, and his loving family. He was born on June 12, 1947, in Peoria, IL, to Bill and Marge Bruer and was a proud resident of Washington, IL.
Collins was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Marge Bruer, and his grandson, Zion Blick.
He married his best friend, JanaKay Weaver Bruer, on December 28, 1968. Together, they built their own "BruCru," which includes six children, their spouses, and 30 grandchildren: Shane and Ingrid Bruer (Anae, Ellyce, Micah, Carter); Andrea and Jason Spatafore (Tyler, Tessa, Trevor); Kasey and Dave Jane (Benn, Will, Emma); Jay and Sara Bruer (Gracy, Vaughn, Silas, Jayely, Delaeny, Ellby, Loy); Holly and Scot Mendenhall (Legend, Epic, Icon, Historic, Inspire, Greatness, Courage, Revolution); Robbyn and Josh Blick (Parker, Roman, Boston, Jett, Zion).
Collins was the heart and soul of his family, and many of his most cherished memories revolve around family vacations, holidays, and gatherings. He played an active role in his church where he led small groups, Bible studies, and was part of the worship and prayer team. Known for his ornery sense of humor, he loved to challenge others' minds and deeply valued relationships he built. Collins had an incredible gift for connecting with people-he never met a stranger, always remembered names, and made everyone feel seen and valued.
A talented saxophonist, Collins found joy in playing at church and at his children and grandchildren's sports games, playing the Star-Spangled Banner with pride. He served in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret from 1967 to 1970, with great respect for his country and those who served and sacrificed for it. In addition to his military service, Collins and Jana were owners of Bruer Photography, a family business that served their community for over 30 years.
A lifelong learner, Collins was always studying, especially the Bible, constantly challenging and growing in his faith. His passion for learning extended beyond the spiritual, and he was always eager to explore new ideas and perspectives. He enjoyed the freedom of riding his Harley, taking road trips, fishing, chopping wood, and cooking on his Green Egg. One of his biggest highlights was always attending his kids' and grandkids' games and activities.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on March 8, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Connect Church in Washington, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Connect Church Community Outreach Fund or the KB Strong Warrior Fund. Please bring a written memory to share with the family. Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington has been entrusted with arrangements.
