Colonel James Smith, 78, of Terre Haute, passed away on Monday, May 5th, 2025, at Regional Hospital. Jim was born in Greene County Hospital on July 18th, 1946, to Paul Smith and Emma (Burger) Smith.
Jim was formally educated at Coal City Grade School and Jefferson Township High School and would go on to study at Indiana State University, and Bill Miller College of Auctioneering. Jim later would co-found Smith’s Small Engines in 1970. He obtained his auctioneers license in the early 70’s. Jim and his wife Jan would go on to open Prairie Creek Auction, which has been in operation for 32 years. Jim has been active in the auction community his whole life. Jim was inducted into the Indiana Auctioneer Hall of Fame in 2019 for his dedication and service. He was also a part of the Prairieton Masonic Lodge 178, past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 291, current Vice-President of the Terre Haute Moose Lodge 1009, and many other organizations and clubs. Jim was very involved with the community throughout his entire life.
Jim practiced his religion at West Side Christian Church and was a devoted Christian. He never lost sight of the fact God has made this life possible and always was willing to give back to his community with anything he could. Jim would hold many charity auctions each year. In his spare time Jim loved to spend time with his family and friends. Most of all he and his wife were avid Texas Hold’em players and loved to play when they could.
He is survived by his wife Janetta Smith, son Jamey Smith, daughter Jennifer Headlee (Charles), stepchildren Julie Notter (Reed), Tom McCullough, and Debra Matherly; Grandchildren, Charlee Headlee, Rowan Headlee Samantha Smith, and Justine Smith (Nate), and a niece Abby O’Dell (Bryan).
Jim is preceded in death by his parents Paul E. Smith and Emma E. (Burger) Smith and his sister Jane E. Barr.
In keeping with his wishes cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held at West Side Christian Church, 126 N. 8th Street, West Terre Haute, Indiana 47885, on Saturday, May 10th, 2025, with the service beginning at 1:00 pm with Pastor Chris Wilbur officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00 am until service time at the church.
In Lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to Westside Christian Church. Fitzpatrick Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
