Comer Lee Dunkin passed away December 27, 2025 at the age of 86. He was born June 23, 1939 to the late Thomas F. Dunkin and Arline Morris.

For over 20 years, Comer proudly served as a shipping clerk at Stewart, King & McKenzie, demonstrating a strong work ethic that he carried through every aspect of his life. His military service in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, was a testament to his sense of duty, as he devoted two years of his life to serving his country. Even amidst the rigors of military life, he held fast to the value of family, making it a priority to always return home for Christmas, a tradition he instilled in his children.

Comer was a quiet, gentle man with a heart brimming with love for his family. He had a remarkable ability to remember everyone he met, often giving them nicknames that spoke to his playful nature. He cultivated relationships with grace and kindness, earning admiration from all who knew him. His gentle spirit extended beyond human connections; he showed the same affection to his treasured chickens and cows, which became a significant part of his life.

As a long-time member of Joy Baptist Temple and more recently, Hope Baptist Church, Comer expressed his love for God through music. He directed choirs at various churches in Selma, including Cornerstone Baptist Church and Water Avenue Baptist Church. His passion for music was not just a vocation but a calling, and he cherished every opportunity to lift his voice in praise for the joy of the Lord. He cherished his daily ritual of settling in to watch Jeopardy!, eagerly matching wits with the contestants from the comfort of home. It was often the highlight of his day—a time he rarely missed and always enjoyed.

Comer embraced the simple joys of life. His garden, where he nurtured particularly delicious tomatoes, was a source of pride. The hours spent caring for his garden were moments of serenity for him, reflecting his commitment to nurturing life in any form. That same devotion extended to the small flock of chickens he lovingly cared for each day. Each one had a nickname, given with affection and familiarity, a small but telling reflection of Comer’s kind spirit. Whether in the garden or the chicken yard, he found joy in tending to living things, and in doing so, he cultivated not only growth, but calm, gratitude, and a life well lived.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Opal Wallace Dunkin and sister, Mary Dunkin.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Tim) Williams; son, Dennis (Dianna) Dunkin; grandchildren, Cooper (Lauren) Dunkin, Seth Williams, Alicia Dunkin, Autumn (Ryan) Johnson, Fayth Williams; great-grandchildren, Clara Dunkin, Bennett Dunkin and Mari Johnson; siblings, T.C. Dunkin (Diane Peal) and Norman (Betty) Dunkin and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 2, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Rev. Donald Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Flat Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Dunkin, Jeff Dunkin, Russell Martin, Jody Ruder, Dusty Daniels and Dylan Dunkin. Honorary pallbearer will be Seth Williams.
