CSM Hickle was my recruiter in Canton, Ohio, and later while assigned to the Montgomery Recruiting BN, he was the 2nd Brigade CSM. Needless to say, he was very surprised I was on recruiting duty. He was my Mentor, an exceptional leader, and friend. I still have the Veterans Day Message he sent me several years ago. I will truly miss him. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Dear Hickle family, I was so sad when I saw CSM had passed away. He was such an amazing, thoughtful and caring person. After my husband passed away he reached out several times to check on me and the children. He even let me use him as a reference for several jobs. He has impacted so many of his soldiers, their families, colleagues and friends. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Michelle Billings.

My condolences and prayers are with Carol and the entire Family on the loss of Ernest who had special meaning to each of you. I'd like to thank the Family for sharing this Outstanding Leader with a Grateful Nation for His Thirty-One and a Half Years of Faithful Service in the United States Army. Two Tours in Vietnam, during a time when the Nation was divided both politically and morally, is something to be proud of. Command Sergeant Major Ernest H. Hickle is without a doubt the best individual to have served in the position as the Command Sergeant Major of the United States Army Recruiting Command. His tenure was a high point for the leadership of the enlisted men and women across the Command. His interest in the welfare, mentorship and morale of the Soldiers and their Families has not been matched since his retirement. He was the longest serving individual in position as the Command Sergeant Major of USAREC. Godspeed and RIP CSM Hickle!

A great soldier and comrade. He was well known throughout the Army as the Command Sergeant Major for the U.S Army Recruiting Command. I had many conversations with him when I was an instructor at the Retention School at Ft Benjamin Harrison, IN.
Ernie loved his soldiers and his country. Above all, he loved and cherished his family. Godspeed CSM, may you rest in peace.
