Cora Jean (Shellhammer) Whitmarsh, 91, a longtime resident of Newark Valley, passed away on July 23, 2025, at her home. “Corky,” as she was commonly referred to by her family and friends, was a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Margaret E. (Grove) Shellhammer.
Corky is survived by her loving children, Darlene Bowen, Diane (Stephen) Newbury, Dennis Whitmarsh, and David Whitmarsh. She was blessed with a large family, leaving behind 14 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, as well and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her great-great grandson Holden Ray, and her two brothers and two sisters.
Corky was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Newark Valley, enjoying the fellowship and friendships of many in her church family. An avid fan of Newark Valley sports, Corky was always ready to cheer on the Cardinals, especially during football season. She was also a long-time bowler, playing on leagues well into her 80s.
She was well known and loved by many most who have been blessed with receiving the gift of one of Corky’s hand-made knitting or crocheting masterpieces, a treasure many with now hold dear to them.
Cora Jean will be laid to rest privately next to her parents in Hope Cemetery. A service celebrating her life will take place at a later date.
