Obituary for Corey Lee Backer
Corey Lee Backer, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away on June 24, 2025, at the age of 56. Born on May 7, 1969, in Fort Worth, Texas, Corey grew up in the close-knit community of Alba, Texas. He graduated from Alba-Golden High School, where his love of history was first kindled.
Corey went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Texas A&M University Commerce and later received a Master of Science in Education from the University of Texas at Tyler. His commitment to learning was matched only by his dedication to teaching, spending his career in various roles throughout the education system, from high school history teacher to Educational Diagnostician. His work helped shape and support the lives of countless children and families.
A proud veteran, Corey served his country as a paratrooper in the 509th Airborne Infantry of the United States Army. He approached his military service with the same courage, discipline, and integrity that he carried into all areas of his life. He also earned a 6th-degree black belt in Isshinryu karate, a testament to his focus, perseverance, and strength of character.
A man of many interests, Corey was a passionate reader, especially on topics of Roman history, politics, and religion. He was known for his deep intellect and a photographic eye, often found behind a camera, capturing moments of joy and growth with his beloved twin daughters, Phoebe and Fiona. He was most recently a member of Grace Community Church in Lindale, Texas; his faith remained the firm foundation and guiding force in his life, growing deeper and richer with every triumph and trial alike.
Corey had a rare gift for humor and an impeccable sense of comedic timing. Whether through a well-placed pun or a quip in a difficult moment, he could bring laughter and light into any room. His wit was both sharp and kind, easing tensions and lifting spirits wherever he went.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Lauren Dunn Backer, whom he married on January 24, 2009; their cherished daughters, Phoebe and Fiona; his loving mother, Janet Poplawski Backer; his brother, Chris Backer; and many nieces and nephews who admired and adored him. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Lee Backer.
In remembrance of Corey's life and in honor of his service, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans organization, a cause close to his heart.
