Cork Swarens Obituary
He was born on August 17, 1939, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Lewis and Geneva Swarens. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Verda and Duane Smith, for most of his early life before starting his life on his own. He was married on June 16, 1958, in Oklahoma, to Karen Kay Bickett who survives at the home.
After graduating from Jefferson City High School in 1956, Cork received a degree in Journalism from Lincoln University in 1960.
Cork worked for the Jefferson City News Tribune for many years and then moved into working as a lobbyist for the Missouri State Medical Association, where he later became and eventually retired as Executive Vice President.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Karen; children, Jeff Swarens (Dene) of Peoria, Az., and Greg Swarens (Lara) of Leawood, Ks.; and grandchildren, Parker, Cameron and Alec Swarens.
Cork is preceded in death by his aunt and uncle, who raised him, Verda and Duane Smith; his parents, Lewis and Geneva Swarens; and his brother Lewis "Bud" Swarens.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Freeman Mortuary.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, 290 Turnpike Road, Suite 5-315, Westborough, MA 01581.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary.

Corky was not just a friend but part of my family. My brother, George Burruss,met Corky in first grade that grew into an amazing friendship. Our family shared birthdays, weddings, anniversary parties, funerals, and just good visits. He was compassionate, supportive and great company.I have had the joy of hearing my brother tell Corky stories that would be an award-winning TV sitcom. I feel so lucky to have had this extraordinary man as part of my family.

I am sorry to hear of Cork's passing. I enjoyed working with Cork during the years that I was on MSMA Council. I had intended to attend the visitation, unfortunately, both Jana and I have developed an URI.

Dear Swarens family,I am so sorry for your loss. I heard the sad news from MSMA. Cork was a great boss while I was working for the medical society. He was very wise and taught me many things which benefitted me greatly in my work with ACOG and AAP. I shall always remember him as a true mentor.
