Cosmo "Lefty" Campanella, (95), was born in Philadelphia PA to his parents Joseph Campanella and Jennie Campanella (Romano) on May 23rd 1930. As a young boy he worked at Broad and Snyder selling newspapers and shining shoes. He studied electricity at Bok Vocational, but as the eldest son, he quit school early to take care of his family. He started as a bundle boy at Jay Company and worked his way up to the youngest-ever Assistant Foreman. It was there he met the love of his life and wife of 70 years June Lopane, and where they started saving their pennies together. He became the owner of New York Cleaners at 28th and Morris in 1969, where he worked for 32 years. The front of the shop was a make-shift candy store, that is still remembered by the local kids today. After his retirement he went back to his roots, and opened a newsstand -Campy's News- at Broad and Oregon, before he retired again a few years later. He was an expert tinkerer, and would find a way to fix anything after saying his favorite phrase "I'll take care of it." You never knew what he was going to say next; he was always joking, smiling and laughing, especially at his own jokes. He always encouraged his children to ask questions and "let your conscience be your guide". He loved watching the Philadelphia Eagles, gardening on his deck, his soul-cat Bug, who he would walk every morning on a leash, and his weekly visits to Stella Maris Church. He lived a very grateful life, often musing on the beauty of the world and saying "thank you Lord" every morning. His family is so grateful to have had him as a husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife, June, son, Robert Campanella, daughter, Lois Campanella, granddaughter Holiday Noel (Christopher Rossello) Campanella (who he only ever called "Angel"), and his sister-in-laws and many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Angelina Thompson, Joseph Campanella, and Anthony Campanella.
Relatives and friends are invited to his VISITATION Wednesday July 23, 2025 9:30AM at The Church of Stella Maris, 9th and Bigler Sts., Followed by his funeral mass at 10AM. Int private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Stella Maris Church.
