On Sunday, November 10th 2024, a dear and sweet soul, Craig Elliott Day, known to some as Kreig, was called to his final rest.
Born to Janet and Barry on April 26, 1971, Craig was raised in Alamance County, NC. Following his 1991 graduation from Southern High School, his adventurous spirit led him to Anaheim, California to work at Disneyland. Craig also lived in Franklin Tennessee for a number of years prior to returning home to Graham.
Craig loved to sing for the Lord and was selected to become a member of the North Carolina Community Choir out of Rocky Mount NC. He was proud to be a part of this group's signature CD release "A Story to Tell".
Another passion of Craig's was cooking. He took classes at Alamance Community College where he pursued an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts. He was excited about being a finalist in "The Greatest Baker" competition. At family gatherings, we were always in suspense about what Chef K was going to bring, especially on our Wednesday game night.
He was a fervent fan of the WSSU Rams, his Aunt Joan's alma mater! He was so excited to have attended the 2024 homecoming festivities.
Craig loved entertaining children as one of their favorite characters including Bart Simpson, Winnie the Pooh, Elmo and at Christmas, Santa Clause. He enjoyed dressing in character for local parades, festivals and the children's programs provided by his Uncle Joel at the Durham County Library. One of his favorite dress-up events was the annual Halloween candy give away with his niece Skye. Craig found joy in making children happy.
Craig was a true drumming enthusiast from an early age, starting with household pots and pans. Upon getting his first drum set for Christmas, sounds of drum beats were heard throughout the house for the next 3 days non-stop. He later became the drummer for the United Harmonizers Gospel Group and for various Burnett's Chapel choirs. Craig later expanded his percussionist skills to include congas and bongos, which he played with pride.
Serving God and telling others about God's goodness was Craig's mission. His family could always expect that early Sunday morning call to make sure we were going to church, just like his PawPaw Willis did. He was a very faithful member of Burnett's Chapel Christian Church and was loved throughout the church community. He was a committed church leader who served as usher president, former gospel choir vice president and co-chair for the Young at Heart committee. Craig, as a visionary, saw the need for a gospel choir director and initially served in this capacity. Craig was a dutiful volunteer with the Burnett's Chapel Food Bank Ministry and a member of the church historical committee. He was first to volunteer whenever there was a need. Craig was always forthcoming with creative ideas and was passionate about doing things "the right way".
Craig was an employee of Cracker Barrel for a number of years selling retail. He took pride in his job and often received recognition for being the top salesperson. Craig was loved by his co-workers and known for making them laugh with his jokes.
Craig's most important job was being an uncle. He loved bringing joy to his nieces and nephews with a special surprise, a sweet treat or by taking them on an Uncle Craig adventure!
Craig was preceded in death by his beloved brother Patrick, step-father Jerry Ratliff, grandparents Willis, Cora, Otis and Stella.
Left with an overflow of loving memories are his parents, Janet and Barry; brother Kevin (Crystal); aunts Joan (Billy), Jerolyn, Fannie; uncle Joel (Nakiya); nieces Skye, Naijah, Kendyl, Alexis; nephews JaVare, Jalen, Ianos, Jahbez, Justin, Jorri, Jahren, Kenneth; bonus sisters LaToya, Tina, and a host of other family members and friends.
