To Craig´s Family and Friends,
I was so saddened to hear about Craig´s passing. He has been such a gentle, kind, creative, and calm presence in our DMH residential mental health treatment program and a beacon of light for our teenage boys who often have difficulty expressing themselves through words, but could find in Craig´s music studio a place to be seen, heard, and supported. As an introduction to our program, I have told each new student and their parents about Craig´s incredible ability to play nearly any instrument, adding the story of the boy who loved watching the old PBS videos of Andre Rieu and longed to learn the violin. Watching this process, and Craig´s ability to ground this boy, giving him a sense of purpose, competency, and reality, was a gift. Craig offered this gift to each student he supported at Centerpoint. His ability to use the themes, beat, vibe, and process of learning music to mirror the psychological challenges and growth experienced in our milieu was appreciated by the entire program, but particularly by our clinical staff. Hearing students´ excitement anticipating their time with Craig that day, listening to their latest song created with Craig, or hearing how they learned a skill they thought was impossible, Craig instilled a sense of wonder, joy, and accomplishment. As the music teacher at our program for the last ten years, Craig has touched innumerable lives and afforded our teens the opportunity to express themselves with music, often the only way they knew how. He will be greatly missed.
