Crystal Hinmon, a radiant soul whose beauty shone both inside and out, embarked on her final journey to glory on October 18, 2024. Her 87 years on this earth were marked by an unwavering faith, a servant's heart and a beauty that transcended the physical realm. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Mabel Brice Thomas and James Cabbell, Crystal's early life was a journey through Charlottesville, VA, Philadelphia, PA, Fort Mott, and finally Salem, where she would leave an indelible mark on all who knew her.
In her youth, Crystal was a vision of grace and elegance. Her striking features coupled with an inner glow turned heads wherever she went; a quality that caught the eye of many, including her soulmate and future husband, Irvin A. Hinmon. Her stunning appearance was matched only by the warmth of her heart and the strength of her spirit. In June 1954, Crystal and Irvin united in marriage, beginning a love story that would span decades.
Crystal's life was a testament to the power of faith and family. She was blessed with two daughters: Michelle Sonja "Mikki" and Jacqueline Denise. In 1960, through the witness and gentle guidance of Mrs. Ann Davis at Anchor Hocking Glass, Crystal found her calling and gave her heart to the Lord. This profound conversion brought salvation to her entire household, with her husband Irvin following in her footsteps six months later.
As a member of Ephesus Pentecostal Church, under the leadership of her pastors, " Pop pop" and "Nana" Myers, Crystal's passion for Jesus grew, eventually leading her to answer the call to ministry as an Evangelist. Recognized for her fervor and unwavering dedication, she and Irvin embarked on an outreach ministry in 1969, touching countless lives through prison ministry, street preaching, and opening their home to feed inmates. Her culinary skills were legendary, and people flocked to taste the love she poured into every meal. NO one will ever match her legendary chicken salad. Her home was the center hub for family gatherings, War-On-Hate rehearsals and all-day Scrabble play offs! Crystal was also a fully licensed cosmetologist, and you could always count on a good meal or a slice of homemade cake after she finished your hair!
In 1971, Crystal co-founded Soul Saving Center, where she led women's ministries with creativity and zeal. Her talent for coordinating church events, trips, concerts, and fundraisers was unmatched. Many credit Crystal for challenging them to live fully for Jesus, withholding nothing. As a mentor, counselor, and encourager, she left an enduring impact on all who crossed her path.
Irvin and Crystal believed in family, ministry and fellowship. God blessed them with beautiful, saved couples who shared the same fire for the Lord and family. They had their own Rat Pack! It didn't matter where they went, you would find them in the company Dave and Elsie, Jean and Russell, Billy and Charlette, and Earl and Francine! They were all inseparable. Crystal was a great friend and shopping partner, running to Cowtown, Mall trips, Shady Maples and Jersey Diners with her sisters Bunny Whitaker, Lucille Forman, Mary Brown and Marie Russ. If you saw one, you saw them all! Not having any natural sisters of her own, these ladies, along with her sister-in-love, Deanie shared a special bond.
Crystal's devotion to her husband Irvin Augusta Hinmon remained steadfast until his passing on March 3, 2015. Above all, she treasured her family, considering them her greatest blessing.
Crystal leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. She is survived by her daughters, Mikki and Jacci; nephew/son Darryl (Hassan); adopted son Joe (Smoke); brother James; 2 brothers-in-law Robert and James; and 3 sisters-in-love Deanie, Carolyn and Barbara. 4 grandchildren Latoya, Cory Sr. (Michelle), Phillipe (Dell), and Ebony; 7 great grand; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and all those whose lives she touched will forever cherish her memory.
Crystal Hinmon's life was a beautiful tapestry of faith, love, and service. Her radiant smile, captivating presence, and unwavering commitment to her beliefs will continue to inspire all who knew her. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate a life well-lived and a soul that touched the hearts of many. May her memory be a blessing and her legacy continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who loved her.
