Christine Coleman Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Christine C. Coleman, age 99, departed this life peacefully on August 17, 2025. Born in Swedesboro, NJ on December 30, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Georgiana and Clifford Morris. Upon the passing of her father Clifford, her mother later married the late Harry D. Green, and together they raised Christine in a loving home environment. She was raised in Swedesboro, NJ, where she attended the Swedesboro School District and graduated from Swedesboro High School.

At an early age, Christine accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and later joined the Small Gloucester Church in Swedesboro, NJ, where she was also baptized.

As she grew older, she met the love of her life, James "Silas" Coleman. On a very nice sunny day, Silas called his "Tine" and asked her to meet him at the jewelry store. Once there, he told her to pick out the ring of her choice, and from that moment he proposed. She joyfully said, "Yes!" They were married on April 6, 1945, and from this union she became the beloved mother of ten beautiful children, whom she affectionately called: Elaine, Jimmy, Gloria, Helen, Barbara, Ronnie, Denise, Debbie, Kevin, and Lynn.

Christine briefly worked for the Heinz Company, but her heart was set on being a homemaker and a full time stay at home wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She truly enjoyed raising her children, talking on the phone with her favorite cousin Pearl, and helping her children and grandchildren with their homework. She especially enjoyed doing laundry, hanging clothes on the line, shopping with her daughters, getting her hair done at the hair salon, and watching her favorite soap operas "The Young and the Restless" and "All My Children."

While still raising her younger children, Christine's heart grew even more as she welcomed her grandchildren. She lovingly cared for the majority of them, filling her days with Sesame Street, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Teletubbies.

Christine was known for her strength, willingness to listen without judgment, nurturing spirit, love of reminiscing, selflessness, and generous heart.

Christine was also affectionately called "Ms. Tine" and was a second mother to many of her children's friends. She possessed a wealth of knowledge, always sharing life lessons and advise for young mothers and children. One of her famous pieces of advice was, "Take a deep breath and count to ten."

Once her children and grandchildren grew older, she enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. Christine's life centered around her family, but she also cherished Saturday nights eating hot dogs with her friend, Ms. Emmaline Dawson. She especially loved watching judge shows on television, the Home and Garden channel, Family Feud, and the Game Show Network.

She often repeated the words she lived by: "Thanking God for His grace and mercies."

Christine was predeceased by her husband of over fifty years, Silas Coleman; her mother, Georgiana, and stepfather, Harry Green; her father, Clifford Morris; three devoted daughters, Barbara Coleman, Denise Skinner, and Debbie Bowick; her mother-in-law, Evelyn Coleman, and father-in-law, Marshall Coleman; sisters-in-law Florence Gilchrist, Helen Smith, and Evelyn Johnson; brothers-in-law James Albert Coleman and Eugene Coleman; daughter-in-law Cheryl Coleman; son-in-law Austin Wallace; and great-granddaughter Layana Griffith.

She leaves behind to mourn her loss her loving children: Elaine (Edward) Gibson, Jimmy Coleman, Gloria Wallace, Helen (Gary) Divens, Ronnie (Edith) Coleman Sr., Kevin (Julie) Coleman Sr., and Lynn Coleman; her sonin-law, Leroy Bowick; and her loving and dedicated grandchildren: Glenn Gibson, Austin Wallace Jr., Daron (Tabitha) Wallace, Jaime Coleman, Alexis (Dennis) McKimm, Brittany Divens, Ronald Coleman Jr., Kevin (Briana) Coleman Jr., Kyle Coleman, Ericka Williams, Rikia Williams, Lynaisa Jones, Coslough Bowick, and Tarrah Bowick. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren: Haven Wallace, Aidan Wallace, Aubree Wallace, Camryn McCoy, Milania Davido, Kaiyah Coleman, Zai Coleman, Asiya Coleman, Anthony Saunders, Amari Saunders, and Nyomi Bowick, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Special thanks to her loving caregivers: Nina Booker, Ericka Williams, Rikia Williams, and Talicia Robinson.
