Culbert Larry Maroney, known affectionately as "Cub" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at the age of 87, in
Ellicott City, Maryland. Cub was born in
Westwood, California on January 11, 1939 and spent most of his childhood in Chico, California. Cub was a man of profound faith and unwavering integrity whose life was marked by his Christian faith, dedication to his family, service to his country, and commitment to his church community.
Cub is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Diane Maroney, his sons Michael Williams, Michael Maroney, Jon Maroney, and Christopher Maroney. He was a cherished grandfather to Kyle, Aiden, and Ryan Maroney, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Cub's legacy of love and guidance will continue to live on through them.
Cub enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957. He had the honor of being stationed in Alaska when it became the 49th State in 1959. After his military service, Cub pursued his passion for religion and spirituality, earning a Bachelor's degree from Pasadena College and a Master's in Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. His deep Christian faith guided him in his role as a full-time and supply pastor for churches in Missouri, Kansas, and Maryland, where he touched the lives of many with his wisdom, humility, and compassion.
In addition to his pastoral work, Cub built a successful career as a Financial Analyst and spent 34 years with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation before retiring. His colleagues remember him as a man of great character, known for his analytical mind, his sense of humor, and his ability to bring warmth and kindness into the workplace.
Cub's interests were as diverse as his talents. He relished in theological discussions, finding joy in exploring the depths of his faith with others. He was an avid supporter of live musical theater, often attending performances with Diane, and together they traveled the world, creating a tapestry of memories that they would fondly recount. Cub was always fascinated by history and enjoyed touring Civil War battlefields and anything else of historic interest. He was a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants, celebrating their triumphs with the same grace with which he accepted their defeats. He was also a lover of the silver screen, enjoying classic films and the wholesome narratives of Hallmark movies.
To have known Culbert Larry Maroney was to have known a man of great substance, who lived his life with purpose and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. His was a life well-lived, full of faith, love, and the joy of connecting with others on a meaningful level. Cub's spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished forever.
