Curtis Lee Jackson, affectionately known as "Curt," was born on October 17, 1941, and passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, in Abingdon, VA. Throughout his remarkable life of 83 years, Curt left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A graduate of Virginia High School, Curt continued his education at several universities. He was most proud of attending the University of Virginia, where he studied business. His career spanned over 50 dedicated years with the Virginia Department of Transportation, from starting in the drafting room and retiring as the District right of way manager. Curt's last project was moving the town of Grundy, showcasing his commitment to serving the community and ensuring safe travels for all.
Those fortunate enough to cross paths with Curt will remember him for his great sense of humor, kindness, and welcoming nature, which always made others feel at ease. He was someone who spread joy and laughter in both his personal and professional life.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Curt enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. He was an enthusiastic player of tennis and golf, sports that allowed him to embrace his competitive spirit. His steadfast support for UVA football and basketball earned him the respect of fellow fans, as he passionately cheered for his team. Furthermore, he dedicated time to his faith by teaching Sunday school at St. Luke Methodist Church in Bristol, nurturing the minds and hearts of the younger generation.
Curt was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Jackson and Virginia Woodard Jackson Harrington; step-father, George Harrington; brothers, William "Bill" Jackson and Larry Jackson; and step-sister, Betty Harrington.
Curt is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Mersdorf Jackson, daughter Karen Hinson and her husband Stanley, son Mike Jackson and his wife Mary, step-son Brad Lower and his wife Lorie, and step-daughter Becky Lower. He is also remembered fondly by his step-brother Winston Harrington and grandchildren Reid Lower, Collingwood Hinson, Parker Hinson, Louise Lower, and Dorothy Lower, along with several cherished nieces and nephews.
A private burial will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Lee Horne, R.C. Singleton, Kenny Hart, Reid Lower, Collingwood Hinson, Parker Hinson and William Denton serving as honorary pallbearers.
Curtis Lee Jackson will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his legacy of kindness, laughter, and service will live on in the hearts of many. His family would like to thank Elite Hospice, Sarah Helton, Jennifer Payne, Lee Horne, William Denton, Eugene Wolfe, The Town of Abingdon, Dr. Joe Roop and his nurse Kristina, and the many friends and family members for their care, love and support during Curt's illness.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Curt's life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Farris Cremation & Funeral Center – Forest Hills Chapel, located at 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210.
