Cynthia L. Nelson

Cynthia L. Nelson, a devoted nurse, cherished sister, and faithful servant of God, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Memorial Hermann Pearland Hospital at the age of 65.
Born on July 28, 1959, in Natchez, Mississippi, Cynthia was the beloved daughter of Walter and Ophelia Nelson. She graduated from North Natchez High School and began her higher education at Dillard University, where she first pursued general studies. It was during this time in Louisiana that Cynthia discovered her calling in healthcare. She went on to further her studies at the University of Southern Mississippi and ultimately earned her nursing degree from Houston Community College in 1994.
Cynthia's nearly 40-year nursing career was a testament to her deep compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication to her patients. As a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), she served with excellence at MD Anderson Cancer Center, St. Joseph Hospital, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, where she completed her career in 2024. In recognition of her exceptional care, she was honored in 2017 as a DAISY Award recipient, celebrating her focus on patient-centered healing.
Beyond her professional life, Cynthia was a woman of many passions. She had a vibrant love for classic VHS tapes, sci-fi films, and an ever-growing collection of Grinch memorabilia that brought joy to all who knew her. Her warmth extended beyond her home and workplace into her church community at New Covenant Christian Church, where she faithfully served on the Usher Board.
Cynthia is preceded in death by her father, Walter Nelson. She is lovingly remembered by her mother, Ophelia Nelson; siblings Lisa Smith, Walter Nelson, Jr., Burnett Nelson, and Gladys Nelson Ford; and nieces and nephews Anthony, Lauren, and Leslie Smith. She also leaves behind many cherished cousins, extended family, Shelia and Greg Jackson.
Cynthia's legacy of care, laughter, and faith will continue to shine through all the lives she touched.
