Cynthia Ann Sweet Moran Cox passed away on October 7, 2025, surrounded by family in hospice care.
Born on June 8, 1949, in Connecticut, Cynthia came into the world a secret. Her biological mother, Eileen T. Egan (later O'Connor), kept the pregnancy from her family in Ireland. Four months later, she was adopted by Alfred Sweet III and Ann Trebbe (later King), who lovingly raised her with her older brother Alfred Sweet IV, in Portland, CT.
Cynthia graduated from Hartford College for Women and held various administrative roles, including work in proofreading and as a legal assistant. She also served as a home aide through Catholic Charities.
In 1975, she married Michael Moran, and their son Evan M. Moran was born later that year. While pregnant with their second child, Michael was tragically killed in an accident in 1978. Cynthia gave birth to Denis S. Moran (Lauren Rasmussen) later that year. Michael's death profoundly shaped her life.
In 1980, Cynthia married William L. Cox, who brought two children to the marriage, Joshua W. Cox (Michelle Banton) and Sarah D. Cox (Kevin Kroger). Together, they welcomed a daughter, Anne N. Cox (Ryan Moore), in 1981. Cynthia and William shared many happy years until his passing in 2017 while they were living in Port Lorne, Nova Scotia. She later moved to Kennebunk, Maine, to be near family. Together, they have eight grandchildren, with one on the way.
Cynthia was proud to have attended Woodstock and cherished music-especially old, sad songs that she would listen to late into the night. Known for her fiery spirit, sharp wit, and infectious laughter (often spoiling her own punchlines), she lived life on her own terms. She had a knack for growing plants indoors, was a voracious reader, and loved doing the NYT crossword in pen. She could talk to anyone, and often did, with a genuine friendliness and warmth that are rare today.
Cynthia faced her share of struggles, including alcoholism, depression, and the lifelong pain of her adoption story. Cynthia will be remembered for her humor, honesty, and brazenness -- a vibrant and complicated woman. She donated her body to the University of New England. Her family will celebrate her life this summer. Memorial donations may be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice Center in Scarborough, Maine.
