Eulogy for Mom
Today, we gather to honor and remember my mother, Cynthia Tellman.
Mom, you were always my greatest believer. No matter how many times I stumbled, you never lost faith in me. You taught me that failure was never the end, only a lesson. You always reminded me that no matter what challenges I faced, I had the strength to rise again. Because of your unwavering support, I learned to believe in myself. I went on to prove not only others wrong but also to prove the strength of my own will, guided by the Lord. I could never have done that without you standing behind me, encouraging me at every step.
I will never forget how you brought laughter even in the saddest of times. Even at funerals, when grief hung heavy in the air, you had a way of making us smile. When the priest would begin to sing with his deep Filipino accent, we all had to fight to keep our laughter in, but not Mom. Her whole body would start shaking, and soon enough, we couldn´t hold it back either. That was Mom, her laughter was contagious, even when we were supposed to be solemn. She had a way of finding joy even in the darkest moments.
From you, Mom, I learned to stay composed, to never give in to anger, and to always look for the positive in every situation. Those lessons shaped the man I am today. Even now, as a sailor, I lead my crew with the same values you instilled in me. Because of that foundation, every single one of the sailors under my command (all 24 of them) has advanced to the next rank. That is your legacy, Mom, living on in the lives you´ve touched through me.
Above all, you taught me love. You showed me what it means to be compassionate, to understand others, and to embrace even those who had a bad reputation or were misunderstood. It was your toughness, your kindness, your faith, and your endless love that made me into the husband, the sailor, the brother, and now the father that I am today. I carry your lessons in my heart, and I strive every day to make you proud.
And Mom, I´ll never forget how you were the first to accept my wife, Cheslene, into our family. You welcomed her with open arms because you knew, just as I did, that she was the one for me. You embraced and loved my two autistic children without a hint of judgment, giving them only pure, unconditional love. You were the greatest Lola to them, the most loving mother to me, and truly the best person any of us could ever ask for.
Thank you, Mom. Thank you for being the greatest mother a son could ever ask for. I love you with all my heart, and I will carry your memory with me always. I know in my heart that one day we will see each other again in Heaven. But until that day, you will live forever in my heart.
Rest in peace, Mom. I love you.
