Dale Schmidt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carson Celebration of Life Center (AKA Carson & Son) on Feb. 3, 2026.
Dale E. Schmidt, 94, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2026, at home.

Dale Edwin Schmidt was born on March 4, 1931, at home near Hickory Grove Cemetery, rural Monmouth, Iowa, to Raymond John and Neta (Bickford) Schmidt. He was delivered by his grandmother, Florence Bickford, who was a well-known midwife in the area. Dale was a 1949 graduate of Delmar High School. He was married two times, both for 30 years. He married his first wife Bernetta in February of 1953. Two children were born to this union, Lawrence and Sheila Rae. Bernetta preceded him in death in 1983. He then found love again and married Norma Jean Grosskruger on July 14, 1984. She preceded him in death in 2014.

Dale first farmed and worked for the Fish N Tackle Company and Clinton Engines, both in Maquoketa. He also was a gunsmith and owned a gun shop in Davenport for several years before taking a job doing Tool Analysis with Caterpillar in Mt. Joy. He retired after 40 years and returned to farming where he kept farming until the age of 89.

Dale was a member of the Christ's Community Faith Church in Monmouth. He enjoyed travelling and fishing, however his greatest accomplishment was building his house with his son, Lawrence, whom he was very proud of.

Those left to honor his memory include a son, Lawrence Schmidt of Baldwin, IA; 2 grandchildren, Benjamin (Kim) Schmidt, and Zachary Schmidt; 4 great-grandchildren, Christian, Emma, Alexis, and Raymond Schmidt; 1 step-great-grandchild, Ian Woods; lifetime friends, Betty (Lawrence Tony) Brammerlo and Kelly and Luella Keeney; special friends, Rod and Maggie Wentworth. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Bernetta and second wife Norma, daughter Sheila Rae, and sisters Cecelia Schmidt, Mary Rath, and Elverda Smith.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 A.M., Friday, February 6, 2026, at Christ's Community Faith Church in Monmouth, Iowa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10 to 11:30 A.M. at the church. Burial will be at the Canton, Iowa Cemetery.

The family would like to give special thanks to caregivers Connie Clark and Velene Merrick, and to the staff of Hospice of Jackson County.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous of Iowa.
