Dale Keith Spurgin

Oct 18 1932 - Mar 10 2026 Mar 10 2026

Dale Keith Spurgin was born October 18, 1932 in Lucas, Texas. His parents were Ollie Alfonso Spurgin and Elizabeth Funderburgh Spurgin. Dale was the youngest of 10 children. He is preceded in death by his precious daughter Sandra Lea Spurgin, his parents, his sisters, Velda Copus and Marie Phelps and six of his brothers, Nobel Spurgin, Buck Spurgin, Cotton Spurgin, Sandy Spurgin, Jack Spurgin, and Truman Spurgin.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Barbara Lou Spurgin, his son Keith and wife Susan, his son Kevin and wife Jana; his grandchildren, Emily Weatherl and husband Josh, Audrey Causey and husband Philip, Molly Valente and husband Nick, Macy Spurgin, Betty Simmons and husband Mike, Carol Boyle and husband John, Jeremiah Spurgin and wife Ashley, Sarah Martin and husband Patrick.

He and Barbara have 18 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. And a myriad of nieces, nephews, as well as friends and former colleagues all over the world.

Dale was a farmer and a man of the soil. After playing baseball and graduating from Plano High School, where he starred at Shortstop he followed his father into farming. A few years later he did a two year stint in the Army. He drove home from Chicago in his brand new 1955 Chevrolet Not long after, he met the love his life, a nurse named Barbara at the Tastee Freeze in Garland.

They married on December 23, 1960 and started building their lives together in Lucas, Texas. He served as the very first Constable for the newly formed city of Lucas. He served for 60 years on the board of the Collin County Farm Bureau, 40 years as an elder at Lucas Christian Church, 20 years on the Grain Sorghum Board, several years on the Lovejoy School Board, and was Chairman of the U.S. Grains Council. In that last role he met world leaders like Fidel Castro, George W. Bush, and many others.

Dale and Barbara's home on Lucas Road housed the family farm headquarters, youth groups, parties, fundraisers, weddings, Bible studies, graduations, roid games, teas, and more singing and laughter than any home we know. Many lives were deeply impacted there. The lonely found home, the lost were introduced to Jesus, the dying were comforted, the poor got fed, and everyone was welcome and prayed for.

His legacy will live on in the family and friends who will do our best to emulate his faith, kindness, and character.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at New Hope Church, 1100 West Brown Street, Wylie, Texas 75098. Interment will be held at Ridgeview Memorial Park following the service.

The family will receive friends during a visitation on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.

Barbara and family-
Dale was certainly a role model for others to follow. I will always remember the leadership provided for agriculture. We are few in number, but we count and Dale recognized that. A friend missed but will be remembered.

Sorry I missed today. Thoughts and prayers to all...
