Daniel "Dan" Jay Akerblom, born on November 26, 1952, in
Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on December 29, 2025, in

Dan was a dedicated and skilled General Contractor who worked tirelessly for over 35 years in his family's company, contributing significantly to its success. A man of many passions, Dan had a love for animals and farming and was deeply involved in American mountain man reenactments, often celebrating his heritage through activities related to his Scottish clan at the highland games. His adventurous spirit led him from camping, prospecting, and gold panning to hiking to find a cave or orchid, echoing the call of the wild that he so cherished. In his retirement, he chose to build "his side of the Mountain" on Worley Creek in Banner Elk. He built himself his dream mountain, farm, cabin, and cottage.
Beyond his professional achievements and personal interests, Dan was known for his generous heart and unwavering willingness to help others. Whether it was volunteering with
Habitat for Humanity, embarking on a mission project to Haiti, or picking up the the weekly food donations for the local food bank, Dan was always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
He is preceded in death by his father, "Jack" Akerblom, and mother, Dorothy Akerblom. Dan is survived by his loving family: daughter Amy Holyroyd (Jeremy), son Andrew Akerblom (Ashlee), and his cherished grandchildren Mason Akerblom, Carter Akerblom, Brock Holroyd, and Katrina Holroyd. He also leaves behind his faithful Mountain dog, Yeller, and his siblings, brother Robert Akerblom, and sisters Kathy Keller, Diane Dimich, and Pat Stone.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Baner Elk Presbyterian, located at 420 College Dr SW,
Banner Elk, NC 28604.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ram's Rack Thrift Store and Food Pantry in Newland, NC, reflecting Dan's lifelong commitment to supporting his community and helping those in need.
Dan Akerblom will be remembered as a loving father, a devoted grandfather, a caring brother, and a true friend to many. His legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, and adventurous spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
