Daniel B. Atkinson, age 68 of Durand, passed away on August 26, 2024, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. Born on March 4, 1956, in Flint, Michigan, Dan was the third of five sons of the late William I. and Esther L. (Schnepp) Atkinson. He dedicated his life to public service, ensuring the safety and well-being of others, and shared an unwavering love for his family.
Dan's journey through life was marked by a steadfast commitment to his community. After graduating from Durand High School in 1974, he began a commendable career in law enforcement in 1977 with the Flint Township Police Department. His passion for helping others then led him to serve as a police paramedic with Genesee County. His dedication to law enforcement continued when he joined the Michigan State Police in 1985. There, Dan served for 28 years, retiring with honors as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2013. Remaining devoted to community safety, he then became the Mundy Township Police Chief. Under his leadership, the department evolved into the Metro Police Authority, from which he retired in 2018. His contributions to service extended beyond retirement, as Dan went on to purchase what is now the Atkinson's Ace Hardware Store in Durand in March of 2023, which his family will continue to run.
At the beginning of his career in law enforcement, Dan would marry the love of his life, Cindy A. Parker, on April 4, 1981 in Swartz Creek and together they raised 3 children.
Beyond his remarkable professional life, Dan was a man of many interests and joys. He treasured his times at his various cabins, a testament to his love for travel and nature. Harboring a deep fondness for his family, he relished in the joys of being a grandfather. Generous, kind, and loving, his soft-spoken manner left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Dan leaves behind his loving wife, Cindy, of 43 years; his children and their spouses, Kara (Jay) Janes, Adam (Meghan) Atkinson, and Dane (Jordan) Atkinson; his adored grandchildren, Peyton, Mason, Gracelyn, Emory, and Wyatt; and his brothers, Bill (Beth) Atkinson, Dave (Shannon) Atkinson, John (Sue) Atkinson, and Jerry (June) Atkinson. Dan is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Dan Atkinson's life was a testament to the power of kindness and service, his legacy living on in the hearts of his family and the community he so fiercely protected and served. May his devotion and gentle spirit be remembered as an inspiration to all. Dan's life was a portrait of the generosity, empathy, and love that define humanity at its best. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Funeral services to honor and celebrate Dan's life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at the Durand Global Methodist Church, 10016 Newburg Rd. Durand, MI 48429. Pastor David Krueger will officiate with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. Dan's Family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 12-3 & 5-8 pm and again on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions given in Dan's name are suggested to his family to in turn be divided among various local programs in the community. Online memories and condolences may be shared with Dan's family by going to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com
