Daniel "Dan" Robert Bowser Jr. of Summerville, son of Daniel R. Bowser Sr. and Jean Ewing Bowser, stepson of Alma Bowser, died Friday, January 23, 2026, at age 85 in Brookville.

Dan was born on January 3, 1941 in Brookville Hospital and grew up in Summerville.

He worked in his father's store, where his entrepreneurial spirit was strengthened.

After graduation from Grove City College in 1962, he worked in industrial sales and insurance.

He moved to Durango, Colo., in 1984 and established his consulting practice.

He wrote "The Bottom Line" column that appeared in the Durango Herald for many years.

He opened an Arizona office in 1991.

In 2013, he and George Huang of Mill Creek, Wash., co-founded Business Money Insights as a way to provide online financial information and education to business owners.

In 2010, Dan moved his residence and business to Summerville to be with Martha Smith.

Advising and helping business owners was his passion and he continued his consulting until 2021.

Dan was active in his communities. He served as president of the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association and was a member of Durango High Noon Rotary.

Perhaps his greatest pleasure came from serving as a co-founding member of the Summerville Story Project. The story project wrote and published a book of stories about Summerville titled "Troy/Summerville, Pennsylvania." The group continues to engage in projects to instill local pride and improve the community.

Dan and his companion Martha divided their time between Summerville and Bainbridge, Ga. He made many friends in the area and was active in two book clubs.

Survivors include his son, Rob (Stacy) Bowser of Queen Creek, Ariz.; his grandson, Jake of Queen Creek, Ariz.; his sister, Sally (Homer) Reitz of York; a niece, Kelly (Dave) Miller; and a nephew, Jonathan of York; and his dear friend and companion, Martha Smith; her son, Matthew Smith; and grandsons, Matthew and Eric Smith.

Yesterday

Dan and Martha rented a house from us following Hurricane Michael near Bainbridge. He was a man of integrity and honesty and I enjoyed getting to know him. After seven winters spent in our mild climate, I was sorry to say goodbye. Good memories of brief conversations.

One of my oldest brother’s best friends. Most evenings my brother John and Jake Miller would be in the Bowser garage working on something with Dan. I liked to listen to their stories. I
bought my first bike from Dan around 1958 for $7.00; Dan liked to repurpose things.
I reconnected with Dan a few years ago and have greatly enjoyed catching up. I will miss him stopping by the shop to talk after he was completing his walks! I greatly appreciated his friendship and wisdom! Sadly he will be missed!
Martha, my deepest sympathies to you for your loss!

Dan and I played together when we were very young. He and I fought many Indian battles in his back yard. We drifted apart after my army time. He will be sadly missed.

Dan was such a bright light and gentle soul.
I always listened intently when he had comments about what our book club read. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a joyful outlook on life, and his light will be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his dear Martha.

Sending heartfelt condolences to you and your family during this difficult time
This picture of Dan and his partner Martha and her son Matthew at Thanksgiving 2025
Being friends with Dan since 2012 we have had many evenings playing cards, puzzles, board games, family dinners, walking along the Red Bank Rail Trail, marathons, road tripping, beachs in Florida and Georgia, Dan loved going out for icecream, walking Bainbridge Boat Basin Trails, and going to casinos where Dan chose to read. His passion for his hometown community was well known. His quiet conversations and some not so quiet. He will be missed. Rest in peace and fly high Dan.
Always, Jeri Berger
