Hello,
We wanted to let you know that we will be honoring and remembering your loved one this holiday season. We are sending Care Packages to our deployed troops in his name. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Daniel D. Bartels US Army Specialist.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, our family, friends and many others who support our mission.

To Dan's friends and family,
I have been a member of the SD Army National Guard for six years and currently serve as a SGT E-5 in the 139th BSB in Watertown. I didn't know Dan, but we were about the same age and we grew up pretty damn close to one another (I am from Miller). A lot of us in my unit wear memorial bracelets, and I want you to know that he continues to service his country even in death, as I am moved and inspired every time I read his name on my wrist. Please know that I am incredibly sorry for your loss. He means a lot to me, even though we never met.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. Dan,
It has been six years since that terrible day. And on this anniversary, our Administration has finally announced the withdraw of US troops in Iraq.
I think of you often, remembering memories of little things that only you and I could understand. For instance, last week I was at the church where Valerie and I were married. I remember our last real conversation we had, while changing into our tuxedos in the cry room of the church. We talked about what a great day it was, that I was being joined in marriage through my church, and you were there for me as a groomsman while I committed my life to my wife.
Just this past week, I saw a snake outside my work, and remembered you. I remember as a kid, Doug, you, and I killed all the garter snakes in your backyard in Huron. As Doug and I used a sickle to cut their heads off, you were the compassionate one, not wanting to hurt them.
With snow coming on, every time I think of skiing, I remember the two times we went to Terry Peak with your church. You and Doug were both kind and hung out with me while I attempted to learn to handle the bunny hills, rather than take on the tougher courses.
This summer, I saw a traveling memorial at the Sioux Empire Fair and stood and prayed by your portion of the exhibit. It reminded me of your anxious attitude, yet silent reserve to the idea of going to Iraq. I was reminded of you asking me for advice shortly after I returned from Iraq. And the only advice I had was to stay alert, and stay alive.
I think, as time goes on, it has been easier. But, you will not be forgotten. As a disabled Iraq combat veteran, often the triggers of war make me think about you and the struggles of all of our troops currently in theater, and those that have come home. It creates an urge within my to continue to support our battle buddies as they return home, then struggle to readjust to our former lives, with the invisible battle scars that only combat veterans understand.
RIP Dan. And say hello to Doug. I miss him very much also.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. Not a day goes by where I don't see dan in my home. Weather it be on the wall in the wedding pictures or through the gift you have given to us and the living plant in dans memory. THe plant won't die becuase dan is with us everday. He watches over us to keep us all on the straight path. We are just getting our lives back in order after losing our beloved Granddaughter, A1C Elizabeth N. Jacobson, who lost her life in Iraq, 9-28-05, but want you to know that your child will not be forgotten and hope that you will be as proud of him for serving as we were of Elizabeth. Without our children this Country would not be what it is today, whether from the first War for freedom until today's wars, we give our lives so Freedom can be obtained. I wish it was different, but unfortunately, it is going to be someone's loved one. May G-d bless our troops, and hopefully, someday Freedom and Peace will reign, so they all can be brought home safely.
