Daniel Gerard Gillan October 17, 1955 – June 17, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Daniel Gerard Gillan, who departed this life on June 17, 2025, at the age of 69 in Estero, Florida. Dan was a beloved husband, father, brother, son, and friend whose presence brought warmth, joy, and unwavering loyalty to all who knew him.
Born in Hempstead, New York, Dan grew into a dedicated teacher and coach, known for his perpetual friendliness, his gift for storytelling, and his deep knowledge of sports. He had a lifelong passion for golf and basketball, as well as health and fitness more broadly. He ran several marathons throughout his life and played basketball both here and abroad.
Dan dedicated over 30 years of his career to Fishers Island School in New York, where he served as the beloved physical education teacher and head coach for golf, basketball, and cross country. His passion for youth development and athletics left a lasting mark on generations of students, and he created a true legacy on the island - one defined by encouragement, mentorship, and school spirit. After Fishers Island, Dan continued his teaching career in Connecticut and later in Florida, always bringing his trademark energy and commitment to everything he did.
Dan is survived by his wife, Cindy; his five siblings; his son, Daniel (Kate); his daughter, Courtney (Luke); and four dear grandchildren - Wyatt, William, Daniel, and Oliver. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Gillan, and his father, Daniel Gillan.
A memorial service will be held on July 12th at the Parish of the Holy Cross in Nesconset, NY, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS association or St. Jude’s in Dan's honor.
Dan's memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. His impact on his community, his students, his family and friends will not be forgotten.
