Daniel Glauber Obituary

Daniel J. Glauber
September 27, 2023
Daniel J. Glauber, 79, passed away on September 27, 2023, surrounded and comforted by his loving wife and four children in their home of 38 years in DeWitt, NY. His final days were spent being showered with the same love and affection he so willingly shared with the world.
To meet Dan was to experience uncommon kindness and grace that would brighten your day. To know him well was to feel that you always had someone to turn to in your hour of need. To be lucky enough to be among his closest friends and family was to receive a level of unwavering and unconditional love, support, and guidance that could not be repaid in a thousand lifetimes.
Dan lived each of his 79 years with a devotion to his family and his faith, values instilled in him by his parents, Dr. Jerome and Islay Glauber, during his childhood in Buffalo, NY and further informed by his Jesuit education at Canisius High School. At a young age, Dan had the strength to follow his passions and the courage to change course as he learned and grew. Out of high school, he spent nearly two years at Bellarmine College, a seminary for the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus. Though he ultimately left the seminary as his faith guided him toward a different path, the bonds formed there would last until his final days.
In 1963, Dan enrolled at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY, where he spent three years as President of the Class of 1967. He put his musical talents on display in the school's a capella group, glee club, and senior show. He went on to complete his graduate studies at Syracuse University. While there, his drive to be of service to others brought him to a summer job as a counselor helping blind students as they learned to navigate the campus. It was there that he met a fellow counselor, Marian Mooney Conan, whom he would eventually marry on June 6, 1970. His life's most prized accomplishment was the 53 years they spent as partners and best friends.
Dan began a decades-long career in vocational rehabilitation counseling, first as the Director of Adult Services for Arc of Onondaga, then leading the Vocational Services Unit of the Rehab Department at Upstate Medical University, helping find dignity and new possibilities for countless patients recovering from the most challenging moments of their lives. In retirement, he found new ways to pursue his passion for helping others. He delivered food donations from the Holy Cross parish to the Food Pantry in Jamesville and served on professional boards and committees for Arc of Onondaga. He strove to learn and improve with every day, teaching himself German and Italian, tending a fruitful garden, singing with the Syracuse Chorale, and mastering the art of baking a good loaf of bread – a service for which his family was especially grateful. He found serenity on the golf course, made an annual pilgrimage to Orchard Park to watch his Buffalo Bills, and traveled the world with his wife. But Dan was at his happiest with his family around the dinner table, hearing stories of the lives they had built thanks to his loving support and guidance.
Dan is survived by his wife, Marian Glauber; his four children, Kathleen (Law) Tarello, Marilyn (Jay Benton) Glauber, Elizabeth (Kevin) Glauber Ahern, and Joseph (Eva Zymaris) Glauber; his four grandchildren, Max, Finn, Islay, and Kieran; his two sisters, Marilyn (Don) Leslie and Paula Glauber; nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Jerome and Islay Glauber, and his beloved dog, Charlie.
Calling hours will take place on Sunday, October 1, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home at 3175 East Genesee Street Syracuse, NY. Dear Marian, Marilyn, Paula and Dan´s family,

It was with deep sadness that I learned last night of Dan´s death from Marilyn. As you know, your Mom and Dad were among my parents closest and dearest friends. Their relationship began with Canisius High School´s mighty class of `28 and continued through Canisius College´s class of `31. Debate teams, Glee clubs, numerous class activities, social events and academic achievements tied my dad and yours and then our dear moms in a lasting friendship of love for their fellow man, and always the deepest devotion to God who was always central in their lives. Looking at Dan´s beautiful picture gives me such tender feelings of how very much he looks like all the best features of his lovely mom and loving dad. Reading Dan´s obituary truly shows how his life so very closely mirrored the values and beliefs which Dr. Jerry and Lee modeled and fostered in their own family.

My heart is deeply grateful to have known and loved your Dan. He is now with a man who also admired him so much. My husband, Frank left us to be with his Lord last summer. I can only imagine the greeting Danny received from his own mom and dad but also from my family, Charlie, Marie and Patti Wick and most of all my precious Frank Michels from Dan´s CHS´s class of `65. How lucky we all were.

My deepest sympathy and prayers to you, especially, Marian, and family. I am honored to know and be a small part of Dan´s overwhelmingly huge heart. He will always be at your side, the more you believe it the more you will experience his guidance. Always let the many values and attributes which your husband, dad, grandfather and brother so generously shared with his world make you proud and make you want to pass them on to others.

With love and prayers for your intentions at this over -whelming time,
Kathy Wick Michels, Kristin Marie, Curtis, David Charles and Milo Frank Michels
