Daniel Lawrence

Daniel George Lawrence Jr., 83, son of Helen Frey Lawrence and Daniel G. Lawrence
Sr. passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025, in Poughkeepsie, New York. Born
on January 25, 1942, in the same city that he would later call home throughout his life,
Dan left behind a legacy of intellect, kindness, and quiet strength.
Dan pursued higher education at University of Maine, where he cultivated a deep
passion for science that would shape his professional life. He went on to become a
respected professor of physics at Vassar College, where he inspired generations of
students with his thoughtful teaching and unwavering dedication to the pursuit of
knowledge. His work in academia was marked not only by intellectual rigor but also by a
genuine care for those he mentored.
Beyond the classroom, Dan found joy and peace in the natural world. He was an avid
outdoorsman who loved skiing down snowy slopes, biking, and camping cross-country
with a group of lifelong friends. Music was another lifelong passion he especially
enjoyed listening to great music through speakers he built himself, combining his love of
sound with his talent for craftsmanship.
Those who knew Dan will remember him for his caring and calming demeanor. He had
a quiet presence that brought comfort to others and was always there when someone
needed support or guidance. As one tribute so aptly put it: "Dan was the father he didn't
have to be, a reflection of the profound impact he had on those around him.
Dan is lovingly remembered by his son James Palmatier; daughter-in-law Jennifer
Palmatier; and granddaughter Morgan Palmatier.
