Daniel Lloyd Manies passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 20, 2023, at the age of 77.
Dan was born on August 22, 1946, in a suburb of Philadelphia, but his family would eventually set down roots in Elizabeth, New Jersey. There Dan continued his education, met and married the girl of his dreams, and had 3 beloved children, Daniel Jr., Deonna, and Patrick.
Dan was a dedicated employee of the Elizabeth Board of Education for 40 years. Although he began his career as a math teacher, his desire to maximize his ability to make a greater and more enduring impact led him to eventually become a school principal. After many years of service in this role, he retired in 2010. He was a kind, masterful leader, compassionate mentor, and strong role model for his staff and students. Every child who came into his office distressed left with a sense of hope, purpose, and heartfelt direction.
Dan was a devoted father, grandfather, husband, and friend. He and his wife, Shiela McCarthy, were married in 1971 and he often unabashedly said they were the best 51 years of his life. The love and respect Dan and Shiela had for each other inspired all those who came in contact with them. Even with life's fast pace, career and family demands, they always made sure to take the time for long walks in the hills of Brigadoon, no holds barred games of backgammon and cards, long talks, and laughter.lots of laughter!
Between his 6' frame and his larger-than-life personality, Dan was a presence you couldn't, nor would you want to ignore. His lighthearted gregariousness put everyone at ease. The stories he told around the campfire, dinner table, and at work are not only remembered, but they continue to work their magic for all those whose lives he touched. If you are reading this and knew Dan personally, you should know you are someone he cared for no matter how long ago or how brief the encounter.
Dan's parents, Richard and Camelia Constantine Manies and his brothers Richard Manies' and Basil Roman's deaths all preceded his.
He is survived by his wife, Shiela McCarthy Manies, son Daniel Jr. and his two daughters Caitlin and Dylan, his daughter Deonna Dellasala and her husband Steve Dellasala and their two children Devin and Sadie, his son Patrick and his wife Melissa Manies and their two children Ethan and Emily. Dan is also survived by his enormous extended family, who loved him madly and will miss him greatly.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to honor Daniel's life by attending the visitation at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Avenue, Springfield, NJ 07081 on Friday, September 29, 2023 from 4:00-8:00pm. The burial will take place at a future date in Pennsylvania.
