Daniel (Boon) Mongiat passed away with his children by his side on October 24, 2024 at St. Mary's Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Daniel was born in Negaunee, Michigan on October 22, 1947, son of the late Clark Mongiat and Miriam (Koski) Mongiat. He graduated from Negaunee High School in 1965, attended Northern Michigan University and then worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company.
Dan married Darlene (Wertanen) Mongiat on December 19, 1970. In 1980 they moved to Portland, Oregon and then to Southern California. He and his family moved back to the midwest in 1985 and later ended up living back in the Upper Peninsula in Republic.
Dan was a lifelong pool player, competing with the high rollers on several occasions, he also loved softball, basketball, archery, horseshoes and golf, a gifted athlete who was good at whatever he did. Dan also attended culinary school and exceeded at making his favorites such as pasties and pizzas. He was a great baker and so much more, always putting his own creativity in his cooking. Dan's grandkids were always on his shirttails being his biggest fans. His life revolved around his family with a special place in his heart for his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Surviving are his two sons, Rick (Jodi) Wertanen of Republic and Daniel James Mongiat (Mary Solis) of Las Vegas, Nevada; his daughter, Kimberly Mongiat-Bell of National Mine; brother, James (Judy) Mongiat; sister, Peggy (Gerry) Koski; sister-in-law, Judy Wertanen; seven grandchildren: Melinda Mongiat-Grandsinger, Greg (Alix) Mongiat, Cody Wertanen, Nikki Wertanen, Cortney (Brandon) Vilona, Danielle Bell, and Anja Prusi; seven great grandchildren: Elliot, Abriella, Elijah, Dominic, Enzo, Aria and Valen; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; his parents; sister, Miriam (Mickey) Pennala; brother-in-law, Ronald Pennala; nephew, Steven Pennala; nephews, Michael Maki and Dean Korvela; and sisters and brothers in law, Vicki (Bobby) Doucette and Nancy (Claude) Korvela.
A Celebration of Dan's Life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 2-4 pm at the American Legion Greenwood Post #114, 3050 Co Rd 496.
