Daniel Joseph Nevils, 80, of Portsmouth, RI passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025. Dan was born in Providence, RI, the son of the late Daniel V. Nevils of Louisiana and Frances G. (O'Malley) Nevils of Portsmouth. He grew up in the Providence and Cranston areas and graduated from Cranston East High School.
Dan married Jane (Riley) Nevils in 1970, and together they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, making their home in Portsmouth for most of that time.
Dan had a long career in the mortgage industry, including several years as Vice President of Residential Mortgage Lending at Bank Newport. During that time, he was actively involved in the community, serving on the committee for Church Community Housing's Home Buyer Training Program- a program dedicated to helping Newport County residents navigate the path to first-time homeownership. Earlier in his career, he worked as a mortgage processor for Larry Nunes Gallery of Homes and for Prudential Prime Properties in Middletown.
Dan was an avid sports fan. He played on local softball teams in his twenties and early thirties and was a devoted fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots. He especially loved baseball, and he had an incredible memory for statistics and enjoyed talking the game with his family and friends.
Dan had a quick wit and an incredible sense of humor, sharing stories in a way that was uniquely his own and always brought a smile to those around him.
Above all, Dan loved his family and was a man of deep faith. His Catholic faith guided him throughout his life, and he was a longtime parishioner of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. He found comfort, peace, and a strong sense of community there.
Dan is survived by his wife, Jane, his daughter, Amanda Mathias, and her husband, Matthew, of Attleboro, MA; and his sister, Jean Malley of North Carolina. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews who brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Jason Daniel.
