Daniel H. "Dan" Scharn, age 65, longtime companion to Marilucia Hyatt - the love of his life - died unexpectedly Monday, May 27, at his home.
He was born in Lowell, May 1, 1959, son of the late Harold V. and Mary E. (Smith) Scharn, and was a lifelong resident of Billerica.
Dan's church growing up was The Salvation Army in Lowell, where he became enrolled as a Soldier in his teens. He attended Billerica schools and graduated in 1977 from Billerica Memorial High, where he competed in cross country and track. In his youth, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 50. After high school, Dan earned a degree from Essex Agricultural College. Later, he became a licensed master electrician and soon launched his own business, Scharn Electric.
Over the years, Dan partnered in several business ventures: most recently as part-owner of Maxamillians Billiards in Tyngsboro, and the former Playoffs Sports Bar and Grill in Billerica.
Dan's willingness to help others was a defining characteristic of his life. When those who knew him think of Dan, they remember his generosity, which was truly remarkable. His heart was always open to others, giving freely - whether his time or resources - without a second thought.
Dan's deep love for his children, and his enduring devotion to them, will be an endless source of strength and inspiration for his family.
He is survived by his daughter Gabrielle Scharn, son Jack Scharn, son Jared Vitale, and non-biological son Marcus Wright, all of Billerica; his sisters and brothers, Steven Scharn of TX, Janis Horsley of Hudson, NH, Kristine Beaulieu of Westford, David Scharn of Dunstable, Robert Scharn of Ayer, Lisa Downie of NC, Dean Scharn of FL, Scott Scharn of Saugus, Brian Scharn of Amesbury, and Diana Lynn "Dede" Scharn of Lowell.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, June 2, at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd, Billerica from 1 – 4 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 3, at the Salvation Army, 150 Appleton St., Lowell at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Lowell at http://www.salvationarmyma.org/lowell
