Daniel Scherling Obituary

Daniel Scherling

February 16, 1946 - January 9, 2026

Daniel George Scherling of DeWitt, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, at Beatrice Health and Rehab. Daniel was born on February 16, 1946, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to George H. and Edna (Malchow) Scherling. He grew up and spent most of his life on a farm near DeWitt. He was baptized on March 10, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Plymouth, where he was also confirmed on April 24, 1960. His confirmation verse was Revelation 2:10, "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life."

Daniel attended country school through 5th grade, then attended First Trinity parochial school before graduating from Beatrice High School in 1964. He began working at Petersen Manufacturing in DeWitt for 4 years. While employed there, he honorably served his country in the United States Air National Guard from 1965 to 1971. He then was a dedicated employee for 41 years at Waldo Farms, DeWitt. Daniel and Connie Deke were married on June 14, 1969. They were blessed with two children, Debra and Brian.

Throughout Daniel's life, he was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of DeWitt, where he served as Chairman of the church council, usher, and greeter. Daniel was a past member of the Swanton gun club and a prestigious recipient of the Quilt of Valor in 2023. Outside of work, Daniel enjoyed gardening and sharing his sweet corn with many family and friends.

He was an avid sports fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Kansas City Royals. He spent many hours coon hunting and raising his coon hounds and rat terrier dogs. His love for all animals was well known, which truly showcased his kind and gentle spirit. He found great joy in pulling pranks and keeping life fun for all those around him. He was most fond and spent many hours following his grandkids' school and sporting events.

Daniel's survivors include his beloved wife Connie, daughter Debra (Chad) Weichel of Plymouth, son Brian (Bobbie) Scherling of DeWitt, and his siblings Arlene Scherling, Jean (Allen) Huff, Dr. Donald Scherling, and Roy (Peggy) Scherling, as well as his grandchildren, Kailey (Ethan) Cradick, Gavin Weichel, and Karli, Kenzi and Kaylin Scherling, brother and sister in laws Lovelle (Connie) Deke, Lois Kotas, and Eunice Mahloch and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents George H. and Edna (Malchow) Scherling, parents in-law Gilbert and Leona Deke, and in-laws Richard Mahloch, Gerald Kotas, and Judy Deke.

Please join us to honor and celebrate the life of Daniel at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 209 North Quince Street, DeWitt, Nebraska.
