Nelson John Scherling, 93, of Smyrna, passed away on September 15, 2024 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
He was predeceased by his wife, Flora, his daughter-in-law, Kimberely, brother, Henry and sister Claire Pici. He was predeceased by two nephews, Gerardo Pici and Peter Scherling.
Nelson was born in West Islip, Sayville, New York and grew up in Clifton, New Jersey to George M and Anna Newhouse Scherling.
He attended Thomas Jefferson Junior High School and received a GED from Passaic Senior High School in 1966, followed by receiving a degree in Radio and Television Service from the National Radio Institute and a degree in Heating and Air Conditioning Technology from the Newark College of Engineering.
Mr. Scherling served as a military officer in 50th Armed Division in The National Guard from 1950 to 1953 as an MPC.
He was a member of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society
Nelson was employed as a printer's helper at Oneida Paper Production, a technician at Mayer Refrigeration in Lincoln Park and Noel Nilsson Refrigeration in Red Bank before becoming self-employed at Nelson's Refrigeration serving for the Monmouth County area in 1971 to his retirement in 1992.
Formerly of Rumson, Nelson and Flora moved to Delaware in 2005.
In his later years, Nelson Scherling remained healthy and active, mowing the lawn, changing the oil on his beloved van, building a shed in the backyard and driving up to his illness that began in June of this year.
He was survived by a son, George, Matawan, New Jersey, a daughter, Carol, Smyrna, nephew, Lou Esposito in Dover, niece Ann Pici in Seminole, Florida and brother-in-law, Phillip Meyer in Virginia Beach, as well as many more nieces and nephews.
Mr. Scherling was cremated and no services have been arranged at this time by his request.
