DANIEL CURTIS DAVID
Daniel Curtis Davidson was born August 17, 1942 to David Curtis and Pauline (Jump) Davidson in the Burke Hospital in Burke, South Dakota. Due to complications at birth Danny suffered with a learning disorder which hindered his ability to read; because of this learning deficit during the school year he lived with his grandparents, Mayme and Granddad Davidson. Their farm was within walking distance of a country school. He grew into a strong young man and graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1963.
After graduation he was employed on the Schulte ranch near Presho, SD. He soon adapted to ranch life, and the Schulte's developed great confidence in his ability to get things done. Danny spent his early years learning to farm with his father, so farming and ranching was the perfect fit for him, and set the direction for his entire life.
When his brother Joe returned from Military Service in 1967 they began their life career of ranching and farming in Gregory County. The two brothers with their combined experience and work ethic soon began to bring results that their family and friends took note of, especially their father Curtis. Danny would tell the story of bringing their new combine over the hill where Curtis was picking corn and they would finish the field for him in an afternoon that otherwise would have taken him a week to finish.
Danny always enjoyed telling a good story and making people laugh, he never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Danny and Joe were regulars at local cafes where they enjoyed visiting and getting to know many. Often the conversation centered on ranching, cattle and horses.
Danny loved working with horses. He never missed an opportunity to buy a "good horse". The boys took a liking to Salers cattle and built a good reputation of having excellent calves to sell at market.
Danny's sisters marveled at his superior memory as he could be relied on to recall accurately family history and to remember dates and details of those events that could entertain and inform his listeners.
Danny knew the Lord Jesus as his Savior and was a regular in church until his health began to fail. When work became difficult Dan and Joe took Jeff and Jo Schonebaum into their operation, a position they still hold today.
Congestive heart failure and diabetes took a heavy toll on Danny's life. He and Joe moved to Gregory to be near medical facilities.
Danny's last two years of life was in the care of the Country Care Nursing Home. He passed on to his eternal rest in heaven on December 21, 2024 at the age of 82 years.
Danny is survived by his four sisters: Jeanie (Emmett) Kotrba, Ruth VandenBosch, Janice (Jim) Hogrefe and Carole (AJ) Steffen, and his nieces, nephews and cousins
He was preceded to heaven by his parents, his brother Joe, and brothers-in-law Jim Bartling and Paul VandenBosch
