Just thinking about Mrs. Lilienstern who always encouraged me to pursue artistic endeavors. I don't know that I measured up to her expectations for me art-wise but I will say this-- I recently applied to an "artist in residency" program at Big Bend National Park this summer. I don't know that I'll be awarded the residency but I gave it my best shot and spent multiple hours over the better part of a week on the application. She taught me to showcase my best stuff and present it in such a way that gave me a chance to win art shows. Important stuff like framing, naming the pieces, and writing descriptively about my work. I got into Savannah College of Art based on this so let's see what happens. If I get in I'll owe a huge debt to her-- even if I don't I owe a huge debt to her. -- Jed Turman, REL Class of '91

This lady was simply fantastic. Mrs. Lilienstern was a keen listener and gifted art teacher and had a real ability to inspire her students. She also had her own brand of snark that I appreciated. I first heard the term "think out of the box" from her. And she dressed cool. Though I had her all four years at REL I began taking art lessons from her in the summer after sixth grade when my dad suggested it. I learned about prisma colors, oil stick, gouache, certain types of paper, and the list goes on... to this day (and I'm nearly 50 years old) I still work with many of these mediums so it goes to show the impression a good teacher can leave on a kid. My condolences to Geoff and Jennifer and your family. All who encountered your mother knew she was a class act.
