Darleen Ann Anderson (née Gower)
September 12, 1933 – July 23, 2025
Darleen Ann Anderson, 91, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on September 12, 1933, in Marshfield, Missouri. Darleen was the cherished daughter of Theodore and Nellie Gower and the beloved sister of Bill Gower. On November 23, 1955, she married William (Bill) Vaughn Anderson, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, faith, and shared purpose.
A devoted educator and lifelong learner, Darleen spent many years in the classroom as a passionate teacher, always believing in the potential of her students. She was also a full-time mother and a coach's wife, juggling lesson plans, sporting events, and family life with grace and strength.
In the late 1960s, Darleen was introduced to running through her husband and the inspiration of Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper's book Aerobics. At a time when few women were participating in the sport, Darleen found her stride-literally. She went on to run seven marathons, with a personal best of 3 hours and 19 minutes, and at age 48, she set national age-group records for both the 30-mile and 50-mile distances. In the 1970s, she was often the only female runner at races and became the first woman to serve as president of the Ozark Mountain Ridge Runners.
Her tenacity showed in every step. In 1980, she joined a relay team of four men for a race in Oklahoma. Each ran 14 miles, and they won, but were initially denied the trophy because their team included a woman. Thanks to a strongly worded letter from one of her teammates, the trophy was eventually sent their way.
Beyond her personal athletic achievements, Darleen was a pioneer in the wellness space. She was hired to create the first corporate wellness program at St. John's Regional Medical Center and organized several iconic races, including the Sunshine Run and the Corporate Cup series. She also played a pivotal role alongside the late restaurateur Anton Tasich in advocating for the city's anti-smoking ordinance.
Darleen and Bill's entrepreneurial journey began with Ozark Gymnastics Empire, which grew into Ozark Fitness Center which was one of the region's first full-service gyms. Together, they fostered a community rooted in movement, strength, and wellness long before the fitness industry became mainstream.
Still, Darleen's greatest joy was her family. She beamed watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren compete in sports, perform on stage, or simply grow into who they were meant to be. Her pride was quiet but powerful, and she celebrated each milestone with love and support.
Darleen lived a life defined by passion, resilience, and service. Whether in a classroom, on a racecourse, or from the bleachers, she gave her best to everything she touched. Her legacy lives on in every life she helped shape and every barrier she quietly broke.
At her request, no public service will be held. The family will gather privately to honor her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you celebrate Darleen's memory by performing a simple act of kindness or supporting youth sports or wellness in your community.

Darleen was an inspiration for women in sports. Gymnastics, running and weightlifting are a few I remember. I worked for both Darleen and Bill at Ozarks Fitness Center.
She will be missed but never forgotten.
Condolences to the entire family.
