Darlene M. Genschow, 71, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of Ferdinand C. and Elizabeth (Papin) Genschow, born in Aberdeen, WA, on June 19, 1954. A proud member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC), Darlene dedicated much of her life to giving back. She served in various KBIC roles throughout the years, most recently as the chairperson of the Enrollment Committee. She always contributed her insight, voice, and opinion with care and conviction. She was a graduate of L'Anse High School and wore many hats in life-mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her family was her universe, she especially cherished her children: Nanette Beck, Robert (Harmony), Alan, and Travis Rajacic, whom she raised with fierce devotion. She adored her grandchildren and great-nieces and nephews. She was meticulous and valued her family traditions while lovingly crafting regalia and beadwork that connected them to their culture and her heart. Her recipes, perfected over the years, were shared with pride and love. She lived fully and loved generously. With her infectious laugh and playful spirit, Darlene, who always wore black, often joked that she was "THE Nightmare on Elm Street," but those who knew her saw the kindness, warmth, and humor that radiated through every corner of her life. She was the casino's KENO Queen and enjoyed spending time with friends and family, beading, playing (and dominating) board and word games, and of course, going for rides with her partner-in-crime, Dolly. She leaves behind a legacy woven with laughter, compassion, and tradition. In addition to her children, Darlene is loved and will be missed terribly by her grandchildren Ashley, Kassidey, Matthew, Addyson, Maaria, Ava, Brooklyn, Anna, Dominic, Jorja, Zara, AJ, and Sage; brother Kent Kruse (CA); sisters Debbie Parrish (NM) and Garen Waterbury (WA); beloved nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces, nephews, and cousins. We find comfort in knowing Darlene has been welcomed into the spirit world by her parents; her daughter, Nannie Beck; siblings Sharon Genschow, JoAnne and Pat Racette, Bob and Gladys Genschow, and nephew Ricky Geroux. She carried a spirit larger than life and a heart that held everyone close. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, and her memory will always shine bright. A private graveside service will be held at the Pinery Cemetery. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
