Darlene Marie (Vugteveen) Moerman, the only adopted child of Peter and Marie (Ver Mulm) Vugteveen, was born March 3, 1935, on a farm near Larchwood, Iowa. She spent her early years living on a farm and started school at Valley Springs, SD. The family moved to California, and she graduated from the eighth grade in California before moving back to the Midwest.
She graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1952. Darlene loved to sing and received many first-place awards at high school music contests. She had fond memories of singing at weddings of friends and family.
Darlene married Paul Moerman on July 1, 1953. After his Army tour of duty was over, they settled in Sioux Center. Darlene spent the first several years of their marriage as a stay-at-home mom to their six children. During those years she was a Calvinette (Gems) counselor and member of the Christian School Guild. Later, she worked with Paul for many years in their Coast-to-Coast Hardware store.
Darlene was an active member of First Christian Reformed Church, and later she and Paul became charter members of Faith CRC. She enjoyed participating in many Bible studies and sang in a ladies’ trio for more than 30 years.
Darlene and Paul moved to Texas in 1992, where they lived with their daughter Laurel and cared for their granddaughter Tara. In 2003, Tara was seriously injured in a car accident, and they became her fulltime caregivers. Darlene also worked for Joann Fabrics for 17 years, before retiring in 2009. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, and keeping up with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Following the passing of Paul, Darlene moved to Sioux Falls, with Laurel and Tara in 2017. She became a member of the Trinity Reformed Church.
Darlene was preceded in death by her father, Peter and mother, Marie Vugteveen; father-in-law, Peter and mother-in-law, Trentje Moerman; son-in-law, James Green; and her beloved husband, Paul. She is survived by her children, Paula (Henry) Brownfield, Mark (Carol) Moerman, Tim (Sheri) Moerman, Steve (Diane) Moerman, Laurel Lioi, and Lynne Green; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
