Obituary of Darrell Dean Lanz
Darrell Dean Lanz, the founding father of Lanz Cabinets based in Eugene, Oregon passed away on December 21, 2021. Darrell was born in Wapello County, Iowa on April 7, 1933, where he graduated from Ottumwa High School before attending Augustana College in Rock Island Illinois. He was drafted into the US Army and was selected to join the army band based on his exceptional ability to play the trombone. He later was asked to be in the Drum and Bugle Corps.
Darrell met his wife Mary Claire Stewart while attending college. They moved from Iowa to Oregon in 1961 where they started building custom homes. It didn't take long before they decided to specialize in building custom cabinets. Darrell and Mary were married for 42 years and worked side by side in the business before her passing in 1997.
Many remember Darrell for his sense of humor and particularly his signature one-line retorts. He was selfless and beloved by all ages. He had a special way of softly mentoring family, friends, and acquaintances that later would become lifelong friends. His legacy will continue through the lessons learned and memories shared.
Darrell is survived by his five children, Cindy Lanz Hull of Vancouver, WA; Brent Lanz of Eugene, OR; Andrea Lanz Petro of Fredericksburg, TX; Denise Lanz Moran of Happy Valley, OR and Ryan Lanz of Lincoln, CA, their spouses, 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and his brother Michael Lanz of Santee, CA.
The family held a private graveside service on December 30, 2021. To honor Darrell (and Mary's) legacy, GirlsBuild.org has been selected to be the charity of choice due to its commitment to inspire curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building.
