Darrell Steven Newcomb, 77, of Delaware passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 11, 2024 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was born on April 30, 1947 in
Tulsa, Oklahoma to parents Fields Newcomb & Louise Newcomb (Laird). He graduated from Stroud High School in 1965 where he lettered in sports. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving in the 50th Signal Battalion Airborne Corps. He was a true patriot and throughout the entirety of his life took great pride in having served his country.
Upon returning home, with a strong work ethic and determination, he went on to achieve leadership roles throughout his career and earned many notable distinctions for his accomplishments. To the delight of his young children, one of his first jobs was delivering Archway cookies to local stores. He later became the third generation of the Newcomb family to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he dedicated himself for many years and later worked for Sprint Communications. Darrell also worked for other entities using his gifts in management and in safety & technical trades.
Darrell was a skilled outdoorsman with a passion for fishing, hunting and boating. Many people were captivated by his storytelling abilities.
After many years of a challenging health journey, Darrell adopted a new appreciation for life and the motto: ODAAT (One Day at a Time). He spent his last years encouraging family and friends to "Stop and smell the roses."
Darrell found his peace in God and closed the doors on this earthly life. He stepped into the perfect love of the Lord where He was made whole in every way.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 28 years, Nyra Jo (Wandling) Newcomb; his children, Michelle Callis (and husband, Scott), Stephanie Van Meter (and husband, Erik), Darrell W. Newcomb (and wife, Tamara), and Robby Newcomb; and his grandchildren, Kannon Callis (and fiancé, Ashley), Kutter Callis, Kaleigh Callis (and husband, Jacob); Kate Van Meter, Fisher Newcomb, Nicholas Van Meter, and Asa Newcomb, and many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews.
