Darrell Skruppy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapels - Bloomington on Jan. 13, 2026.
Darrell Mark Skruppy of Eagan, Minnesota, was unexpectedly called home to the Lord on January 1, 2026. He left this earth just as he and many others would prefer; at home, quickly, peacefully, and without suffering...what a gift! Darrell returned home from the hospital late afternoon on New Year's Eve after having a mass removed from his kidney. That evening he reached out to several loved ones to extend a Happy New Year and perhaps share a joke.

Darrell was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 9, 1952. He (a.k.a. "Skumper") grew up as the eldest of five in the Crystal /New Hope area. In his young adulthood Darrell was fond of dirt bikes, fast cars, and motorcycles of which he owned, and was very proud of, a beautiful Chevy Camaro SS and a uniquely decked-out Yamaha "chopper."

Darrell married Denice Ingalls on July 10, 1993, thus enjoying over 32 years together. The two delighted in travel and they utilized their timeshare in places such as St. Maarten, Hawaii, Florida, Arkansas, the east coast, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Driving was Darrell's happy place, and he preferred to do so whenever possible. Once retired, journeys to see family in Arizona became routine for them and a highlight for Darrell.

As a dedicated employee for over 20 years at Mission Lodge in Plymouth, Minnesota, Darrell provided both nurturing and compassion to those who struggled with drug and/or alcohol addictions. He had the heart to see people set free from the bondage that held him far longer than he preferred. Both Celebrate Recovery meetings and friendships at Peace Church were a significant part of his life.

To call Darrell a bicycle enthusiast would be an understatement. He was more of a spandex warrior whose passion for cycling grew out of his grounded driving privileges. It was essential for him to trade his four wheels for two. His alias became "Darrell the bike man". If he knew you liked to ride, he'd want your cycle to be in its peak operating condition and would do whatever he could to help you achieve it. His collection of 15 two-wheelers included several for the young in hopes it would spark an interest for a future riding partner.

Darrell's love of volleyball included both he and Denice hosting numerous parties at their home. They would serve up lots of fun and hope to "spike" your interest in the sport, with of course, them always having the home court advantage.

After suffering a stroke in September 2022, Darrell's recreational activities changed dramatically, returning him to an interest from his earlier days when he was known as "Darrell the movie man". Once again, he enjoyed watching movies, sporting events, and the oldies on T.V. He now had more time to reach out to others. Darrell had a passion for people; therefore, family events and friendly connections were always his priority. It was important to him that no one ever feels alone, and if you met him once you were considered his friend. He left his legacy of love for family and friends.

Darrell is survived by wife, Denice; stepson Nick (Jenel) Zink; grandchildren, Nicholas Jr. (Amber) Zink, Alyssa Zink; sisters, Cheryl Skruppy, Denise (David) Heckman, Diane (Kevin) Beuning; sister in-law, Carol Barnes and many nieces, nephews, and other family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by parents, Eugene and Gayle Skruppy, and brother Craig.

I knew Darrell in the 1980s and 90s. We used to hang out and play volleyball together at a recreation center and at his house a few times. I've always known him to be soft-spoken, kind, and concerned that everyone felt included at a party or gathering. Both his words and deeds showed that he genuinely cared about people.
Years ago, Darrell brought our mutual friend, Chad, and me to the Lake Superior area for an afternoon of white-water rafting on what I believe was the Saint Louis River. It was exciting. There were tour guides, but there was still a real potential to get hurt. One person in a rubber raft with his crew did get injured while navigating the rapids and large rocks; he suffered a dislocated shoulder.
The guides instructed him on how to reset his arm back in place. He followed their instructions, then said, "Hey, I've had this happen a couple times. Why didn't anyone ever tell me how to reset my arm myself until now?" Regardless of that incident, it remains a fond memory.
I had not seen Darrell and Denice for many years until they visited me recently. I'm an auto mechanic and was checking Denice's car. Afterward, I gave them a tour of my geodesic dome house. It was a pleasant reunion, seeing them again.

Our condolences to Denice and family. Darrell was our neighbor for 34 years and would often stop over to play dominoes and talk bikes. We will miss his kind heart. He is at peace.
