Darrell Spain, 79, of rural Montezuma passed away on Sunday, January 12 at his home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 15, at 1:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma with a coffeetime to follow in the United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Montezuma. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 14, beginning at noon with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Montezuma Methodist Church, the Blakley-Stevens American Legion Post 169 or the Montezuma Fire and Rescue. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of the arrangements.
Darrell Ray Spain was born on May 19, 1945, the son of Orville and Lucille Lambirth Spain at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Darrell attended school at Barnes City until the consolidation with North Mahaska graduating in 1963. He then attended Iowa State for a short time before graduating from Northwest Missouri State with a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture. Darrell was united in marriage to Sherri Ketels on February 24, 1968. To this union two sons were born, Jeff and Jim. Darrell was drafted with the US Army in 1968 and was stationed at Ft. Riley and then Germany before being honorably discharged in 1970. They then moved back to Montezuma and farmed for the next 46 years retiring in 2016. He loved sports, was a Cubs fan, Yankees fan, and Raiders fan. He loved playing fast pitch softball, enjoyed visiting with his friends at the Barnes City Coop, was a member of the Methodist Church and above all, loved his family and attending all of their activities.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Sherri and his son, Jim (Robin Boisen) of Des Moines and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeff; his parents-in-law, Walter and Maxine Ketels; his sister, Darlene (Chuck) Hess; his brother, Kenneth Spain in infancy; his sisters-in-law, Karen (Ralph) Willett and Judi Ketels.
