ALBION – Darren Smyer, age 65, passed away peacefully in his home in the beautiful Albion Valley on Friday, June 27, 2025.
Darren was born November 30, 1959, in Burley, Idaho, to Bennie Smyer and Renee Eames Smyer Holtman. He was the eldest of four children. He attended Declo High School where he played football, basketball, and track.
Darren was a hard worker and took pride in everything he did. He worked for Albion Telephone Company for over 20 years, later spent 15 years with Evans Grain and Mineral, and also worked several years for the Albion Highway District.
From a young age, Darren had a deep love for animals. He started Salt Shaker Sheep Co. and over the years raised cows, horses, goats, and pigs.
He loved the Albion Valley and was committed to serving his community. Over the years, he served on the Albion City Council, the Planning and Zoning Committee, and as President of the Albion Senior Citizens Committee.
Darren valued his family more than anything. He looked up to his grandparents and parents, and cherished time spent with his siblings and cousins. His greatest joy came from being a dad and grandpa.
Darren had a rare gift for connecting with people. He never met a stranger. He was always smiling, cracking jokes, and bringing warmth into every room. No matter what challenges he faced, he stayed positive and never lost his sense of humor. He was always ready to lend a hand without expecting anything in return.
He is survived by his children, Colton (Maritza) Smyer of Pocatello, and Megan Smyer of Rexburg; his grandsons, Malakai Darren Smyer and Noah John Smyer of Pocatello; and his siblings, Roxanne Gillette of Burley; Rick Smyer of Mackay; and Dennie (Natalie) Smyer of Springdale.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at St. Luke's Cancer Institute, as well as Intermountain Home Health & Hospice for their kindness and care.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Albion Ward, located at 889 S. Main St., in Albion, with Bishop Mike Gailey officiating. Burial will follow at Albion Mormon Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, located at 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Albion Senior Citizens Center in Darren's name.
