Thomas Melvin Smyer

Thomas Melvin Smyer, 73, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025. Born in San Diego, California, Tom was the third of five children. His early life was marked by his father's naval career, which led the family to live in many places, including a cherished period on Ford Island in Hawaii.
After graduating from St. Joseph's High School in Alameda, California, Tom earned his political science degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. It was there that he met Susan Hazelbaker, whom he married on June 5, 1976. Their 49-year marriage was a testament to their love and partnership.
Tom and Susan raised their family in League City, Texas, where he worked for the City of Houston for two decades. As a buyer for the city, he found immense satisfaction in helping procure furnishings for those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He later served as the Capital Improvements Manager for Houston First, ensuring the maintenance of the city's event venues.
After retirement, Tom and Susan enjoyed traveling, with a special love for cruises. Among their many trips, a pilgrimage to the Holy Land was particularly memorable. At home, he enjoyed being with his family, particularly his two young grandsons. He was also a devoted member of Bay Harbour United Methodist Church and found great joy in his many friends from the Zkrewe and Carlos' Beer Garden.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Captain Ted Smyer (USN, Ret.) and Dorothy Moose Smyer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; his son, Michael (Kayla) Smyer; his daughter, Beth Smyer (Tom Haskell); and his grandsons, William and Jack Haskell. He also leaves behind his brothers, Ted and Tim; and his sisters, Sue and Sally.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Bay Harbour
United Methodist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am.
